Butterworth MTB5138G. Old school cherry fibreglass blank. Graphite from the butt gradually tapering out like a Snyder Glas Flame Wrap in the middle. As many of you know, Sportex’s 662/663 and Butterworth’s BF5144 range are highly sought-after blackfish rods. I’d place this particular stick above all of them.

If Butterworth’s coding was consistent, this blackfish rod would be labeled BF5144LG. It’s rolled on the same mandrel as the other BF5144s with the same glass pattern, featuring a cherry L-glass, but it includes a layer of graphite from the butt to the tip. This gives it a striking dark metallic cherry/brown finish, reminiscent of the butt end of Snyder Glas’s HHGT. When placed alongside a BF5144L, it’s lighter in weight while matching the strength of the BF5144H, creating a lighter yet stronger Luderick outfit.
