One colour is *simply* not enough – we are thoroughly obsessed with the colour range of the Charbonnel Etching inks here at Melbourne Etching Supplies. Each colour boasts high pigment levels, ensuring remarkable covering power even when diluted (with extender, plate oil or transparency medium). Similar to oil paints, Charbonnel inks undergo oxidation to dry, with a drying time of 2-3 weeks depending on the specific colour.

We are not the only ones who love these inks. Renowned artists such as Renoir, Degas, Lautrec, Picasso, Rauschenberg, Hockney, Diebenkorn and Thiebaud were also fans!

Sold by the metre, we stock the Tarlatan Coarse (Soft) which is a softer, loosely woven tarlatan used in intaglio printmaking for the initial wipe. Its open weave allows it to hold large amounts of ink, making it ideal for removing excess surface ink while keeping ink in the etched lines.

We also stock the Tarlatan Fine (Stiff) which has a firmer, more tightly sized tarlatan with a finer open weave. Used for secondary and final wiping, it offers greater control for refining tones and cleaning the plate without disturbing fine detail. Fine tarlatan is also a great option as a lining for your book spine or covering materials in bookbinding.

Our Silk Cut Lino has been specially made for artists. It is softer and less dense than traditional brown lino and features a fabric backing. Images can be drawn on to the product with pencil, ink or transfer and can be put on a hot plate to warm for easy cutting.

Silk Cut Lino can be cut easily by scoring through the back of the lino and then folding to break of the new size.

We carry Silk Cut Lino in sizes from 30x30cm squares all the way up to a 1m x 1.8m roll!

The Fitzroy Etching Presses 400 Press is one of our most popular etching presses for those working in small spaces or as a first press. Made locally, by Fitzroy Etching Presses, these are built to order in with a turnaround time of approximately 6-8 weeks.

The 400 press features 75mm diameter rollers, Japanese roller bearings, laser cut sides and brass safety stops. The price for this press includes a solid steel bed, 650mm hand wheel and safety strap. This is designed to be used on a bench or table top, but can alternatively be mounted on a stand to be purchased separately, with the option of lockable castors for easy movement. The 400 is also an excellent choice for people who need a portable press for workshops and residencies, as when the bed has been removed the press can be easily lifted by two people.

A delightful moment before the shop opened – we are loving the sunnier mornings, and wishing today wasn't so rainy, in our Fairfield store as winter comes to an end!
