It's Tim's turn to recommend his five favourite books of the year so far, and here they are.

Whether you would like a beautifully insightful novel about a history teacher caught in the political maelstrom of contemporary America, a gripping collection of short stories about twisted secrets and joyful liberation, a careful study of a woman's encounters with all things Switzerland, a deadpan story about two London journalists coming to terms with change, or a masterful narrative of a boy's homecoming to his family croft in the Outer Hebrides, you'll surely find something perfect from Tim's picks. Come and visit the bookshop, and he'll tell you all about them. 📚

We’ve got some big news to share: we’re renovating the shop! We’ll be closing from July 5 while we get the work done, then reopening in a few weeks with a fresh new interior. Consider this your one-month warning to stock up on all the books you'll need while we're away. Our top five picks are rolling out here over the coming weeks if you're after a little inspiration, but as always, pop in and we can curate a bundle just for you. See you soon at 14 Macleay Street.

Next are Naomi's favourite reads of 2026:

A curator who, in creating an installation at a medieval castle, imagines the life of a long forgotten king; a man drops his phone in the sink just before a critical interview; twisted families and an America in decline in snappy short stories; a woman's life is knocked off kilter after a dog bite and hospital sojourn; and a literary journey told through vignettes of Swiss authors, artists, and encounters.

Swing by the shop to speak to Naomi about them ❤

In this first half of the year, Eamonn has loved these five books more than any others.

His choices include a witty slice-of-life classic about forbidden love that weaves between the Upper West Side and Upstate New York, a selection of cutting short stories about twisted American families that will leave you very anxious, a novel about Deborah Levy wandering around Paris with her friends and wondering about Gertrude Stein, a note-perfect tale about a boy’s return to his family croft on the Outer Hebrides and the secrets that we keep from each other, and a gripping piece of narrative non-fiction about the seedy oligarchs and gangsters who run contemporary London.

If any of these picks pique your interest, come to the bookshop and ask Eamonn about them. 👀

We're starting early with our mid-year check ins for 2026. Up first is Steve with his favourite books of the year so far.

He's been loving a set interconnected short stories set in a fading Western Australian town (from 2004); the past threatens to overwhelm after a 15 year absence leads to a grim homecoming, to a gimlet-eyed history of a woman's relationships over the course of her life; a fictional travelogue through Switzerland told in vignettes on Swiss writers, artists and culture; and essays from one of Britain's best authors and cultural commentators.

If you're thinking 'wow, those descriptions sound incredibly vague' that's because these books are alike in that they character-focused, expansive, nimble, and defy easy categorisation. Please come in to the shop and talk to Steve so he can do them more justice, or just know that they come highly recommended ✅

It was such a pleasure to have in the shop to sign copies of her brilliant books, The Dream Keeper, Between and Snap!. We are in awe of her work and especially love the intricate felt characters she’s created (swipe across to see her video). Very special!
