It takes a village! They may look like they don't have a care in the world, but that is only because of the wonderful volunteers that understand that a village is more than just humans. On behalf of the hundreds of wildlife that arrive at the shelter every year, thank you for the room service and housekeeping that keeps little orphans like these in blissful repose until they find their way back to the environment that is their village too. Thank you for your tasty shoe laces (fuel for wombat dreams); for raking poo from the roo yards in all weather - an 'art work' abandoned rather than ever finished; washing and sterilizing hundreds of milk bottles and teats several times a week; for sorting through mountains of washing while trying to avoid the intimidations of crazy emus. Thank you for not stepping on tails and toes and learning to 'dance' around wombats. Thank you for greeting the residents (and each other) with kindness and pleasure and for reminding Jon and I of the wonder of these creatures.

And for every animal that has found help at the shelter, there is a person that rescued them and got them here. Thank you to the amazing volunteer rescuers who are on the front lines of the clash between humans and nature and who alleviate suffering with such kindness and respect.
