Back in 2021, I did a 🥧 review at Bucks Bakery in Landsborough QLD. It was also one of the locations that participated in “Pyney’s 🥧 Day” The bakery has since been sold and had a full name change names. It’s now a CJ’s Pastries store, so I decided to get in touch with the new owner Darren and lined up a visit.

CJ's Pastries - Official 🥧 journey started in easter 1993 when Darren and Meg took over the Wamuran Bakery in South East QLD. Fast forward 33 years and CJ’s now has 13 locations, a huge factory and a team of over 225 people. The Landsborough store is located in the centre of town. For those who are not aware Landsborough is a historic hinterland town on Sunshine Coast, famous as the gateway to the Blackall Range and its close proximity to Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo.

Sadly Darren was unavailable on the day of my visit, but I was lucky enough to catch up with store manager Barb. Barb runs a fantasic ship and has this store absolutely humming. The cabinet display is impeccable and the selection of products available is endless. After meeting all the crew and getting the tour it was time to get this party started and choose a 🥧 to review.

There is stacks of different flavours to choose from including traditional and gourmet. This week I went with something I haven’t had for quite some time that was a chunky/mince curry 🥧. It’s been ages since I’ve had a curry 🥧 and I thought why not, let’s give this one to go.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - $7.60 represented pretty good value. This wasn’t a massive 🥧, but it still was a decent size in both depth and diameter and completely full. 8/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - Pics will show this was a full 🥧 !!! Well done team 10/10

3. Flavour - This was a really solid curry flavoured 🥧. The chunky/mince combination tasted great and the meat was incredibly tender. The curry flavor was only mild but still offered plenty of flavour. The 🥧 was a little salty, but nothing that’s going to scare you away. Overall the team has done a good job with this one. 7.5/10

4. Pastry - A few minor things to tinker, but overall the pasty was very good. The top bake in particular was very well presented, it was flakey and tasted sensational. The stability was also very good as was the color. The bottom bake thickness was satisfactory but had a small wet line and the shape was a smidge wonky. Apart from these minor points the team have done a good job with this pastry. 7.5/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect temp !!! 10/10

For a company that pumps out serious numbers this was a quality product. The flavour really surprised me and tasted really nice for a basic curry 🥧. The combination of chunky/mince was the perfect blend. It’s been ages since I’ve had a curry 🥧 and this one didn’t disappoint. I would have another one in a heartbeat. As mentioned the top bake was excellent and tasted superb. $7.60 represents good value and the 🥧 was totally full. A few minor points to work on, but nothing major. Well done team, this was a 🥧 I enjoyed and the curry flavor was the right choice. 100% add this CJ’s Landsborough store to your travel plans. There is ample parking and seating so you can sit down relax. Don’t forget to check the boards for their daily specials and combo deals they are red 🔥.

A massive thanks to Darren for getting back to me and arranging my visit. Barb and the rest of the team were absolute legends and this was a really enjoyable review. Barb the store manager has been there for over 15 years and is still is as passionate as ever and goes that extra mile to satisfy her clients. Darren and Meg what you have achieved over the last 33 years is simply outstanding and your passion to get better and better at everything you do is very inspiring. This is a monster operation and you should be so proud of your efforts, but your 🥧 journey is far from finished. All the best mate, hopefully we can catch up this December when I’m next up that way.

If you haven’t been to Landsborough you’re missing out, this is a cracking little town with so much to see and do. You’re only a short stroll off the Bruce Highway and as mentioned vert close to the famous Australia Zoo. This town is certainly one of the Sunshine Coast hidden gems.

Little Kiwi Bakehouse in Nerang is next cab of the rank and this visit was a absolute cracker. One of the Goldie’s best 🥧 joints didn’t disappoint, so keep a eye out for this one.

Ok 🥧 legends let’s chat alcohol in 🥧’s !!! whether it’s beer or spirits I’m keen to get everyone’s thoughts.

I’ve tried so many 🥧’s with so many different types of alcohol and to be honest I’ve never had a bad one yet.

Do you pefer beer or maybe a set type of spirit. The legends at
Missen Link burgers in Traralgon Vic have created a little beauty which I’m keen to try. Below are just a few I’ve tried over the years.

Pomona Bakery
(Pomona QLD)

After leaving Hervey Bay we made our way down to the Sunshine Coast. I had several meetings lined up for the week, plus I wanted to visit a few bakeries. One of those bakeries I wanted to visit was the Pomona Bakery. This bakery holds a very special place in my heart, it was the venue where I conducted my first ever review back in 2020. Since then over 1,100 bakeries and 🥧 joints have been visited. So I thought I’d head back to where it all begun and see if the 🥧’s had changed.

Pomona is located about 135km north of Brisbane. It’s a historic hinterland town in the Noosa Shire known for housing the world's oldest continuously running silent movie cinema (the Majestic Theatre) and sitting at the foot of the rugged Mount Cooroora.

The bakery is in the centre of town just and has changed
owners since my original review. Shane and Sam bought the bakery back in March this year and had no baking experience what so over when they took over. The couple has spent the majority of their career working on the land and are still farming whilst running the bakery and another one they purchased in Brisbane.

This old school bakery has a fantasic outdoor seating area and a beautiful cabinet display filled with all the old school products. The selection of 🥧’s on the menu is also quite impressive with over 15 different flavours to choose from. Choosing a 🥧 to review was a easy decision. I wanted to review the same flavoured 🥧 I did way back in February 2020. As soon as it came out of the 🥧warmer I knew I had made the right choice.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - At $8.95 it’s certainly up there in price, but this bad boy weighed in at a whopping 348grams. This is over 100 plus grams higher than the industry standard. This was a huge 🥧 in both depth and diameter and the $8.95 price tag was worth every cent 10/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - Totally full !!! No more words required 10/10

3. Flavour - The flavour was as good if not better than my first experience back in 2020. Tackling this 🥧 was tough as it was so big, but the first bite was fantasic. The mince/chunky combination was beautifully cooked and the dark gravy sauce tasted great. This pepper 🥧 had some serious kick thanks to the black cracked pepper which could be tasted with every bite. Just a basic pepper flavoured 🥧 done really well. Great job. 9/10

4. Pastry - The overall standard of this pastry was really good. The color, shape and shrinkage were all of the highest standard. This 🥧 was bloody heavy and the stability was absolutely perfect. When tipped upside down this 🥧 didn’t move one bit. The top bake and its thickness was near perfect and tasted great. The only negative was the bottom bake was slightly underdone (wet lines in pic) Apart from this minor blemish the pastry quality was excellent. 9/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect temp !!! 10/10

This was a epic product and hasn’t changed since my original visit. I’ve had so many Pomona Bakery pepper 🥧’s and they are up there with the best I’ve had. 348 grams is a massive 🥧 and the price tag was totally worth it. The 🥧 was full, the flavour great and the pastry was very well put together. The baking team have done a sterling job with this product and need to be congratulated. Be warned the black cracked pepper has a little kick to it 🔥 but nothing that’s gunna scare you away. Coming back to this sensational bakery didn’t disappoint, and I strongly recommend this particular flavoured 🥧 it was an absolute beauty. Great work legends, see you again soon.

A huge thanks to the team for having me in. I absolutely love this bakery and it was pretty awesome to get back to where it all started. Since taking over in March, Sam and Shane have made a few little changes, but the products are still as good as ever. This is your classic country bakery, where the people come to enjoy great food and catch up with friends. Stay tuned !!! You will see some big changes over the next 6/12 months with a full paddock to 🥧 experience. This is going to be a real game changer and I cannot wait to get back and give them a try.

Pomona is a fantastic little town that’s 100% worth visiting. It has that real country feel to it while only being a half hour drive from Noosa. The Pomona pub is also worth checking out, the pub grub meals are massive and well priced.
