Before Lycra, before gears, before suspension — there was the boneshaker. In 1868, the velocipede kicked off the world's first pedal bike craze: iron frames, wooden wheels wrapped in iron tyres, and absolutely zero mercy on cobblestones. It sold by the thousands, spawned indoor riding schools, and single-handedly triggered a hernia epidemic. The small problem? Nobody thought to test it on actual roads. One season later, the craze was over. This week we kick off our Great Cycling Flops series with the bike that literally shook people apart — and we have no regrets telling this story.

What a morning at Lake Alex 🌅

The Darwin Triathlon Club Mixed Teams Relay this morning was everything — dry season fog over the water at sunrise, 8 teams, massive volunteer effort, and an absolutely cracking atmosphere from start to finish.

The format is three athletes per team, each doing the full tri (250m swim, 5km ride, 1km run), then tagging the next person. What makes this race so different is the vibe — instead of everyone racing at the same time, you're on the sidelines cheering your teammates on, which you almost never get to do in triathlon. It's loud, it's fun, and the camaraderie is something else.
