Making a french horn switching lever, Just some sanding and polishing to go

The Owner lost the lever a long time ago and has learnt to play without it.

No aftermarket one fitted or original could be sourced as she is an old french horn so we got the task of making one, I like to make sure it works before doing sanding/polishing/plating

Quite a complicated geometry to design/work with on this one, but she plays really nice and lever functions flawless

Solid silver is one of the nicest materials to work with

This key needs a new touch point, so we fabricate the touch point then graft it to the key

Process
Fabricate key part
Prep key for fitment
Hard solder parts together
File and smooth to desired shape
Buff to shiny
Refit pad
Fit key to instrument

Making resonator lugs for saxophones

Here I have rough cut some brass lugs on the lathe and then facing them all down to an exact 0.5mm thickness on the head, this way they sit under a saxophone pad without affecting its height in the key

stuck slides.

When you have a really stuck slide on a brass instrument be it from a dented inner and outer tube (this one) or corroded in place you have a couple of repair options

First do not try and hammer it out with some fancy shaped piece of wood or what have you, you will crush the u section

1. Heat and soak oil into the gap, see if it comes free, if not let it sit for a couple of days and repeat each day
2. If step one fails then you have to unsolder the slide and its reciever
3. Solder one side of the reciever pipe onto a brass pipe bolted to a bench vise
4. Do a side to side work of the u section to break the join, always works
5 Repeat for the other stuck side
6. Repair the reason why it was stuck

This one was stuck because its taken a small hit which has bent inner and outer sldies, add a bit of corrosiion and it was never coming off

Repair. take out dents from inner and outers

Nothing exciting but had to take a photo to send to customer, so will repost here

When a register mech or any key struggles to move smoothly, first test is remove the key, remove the rod, then fit the key to the rod and hold it at 90 degrees, if it doesn’t fall under its own weight, then the rod or the key is bent

Case and point

1st photo holding key at 90 degrees and key doesn’t rotate under its own weight
2nd photo, whilst only small you can see the lever arm is actually out of alignment to the hinge tubing
