Kogarah Historical Society Kogarah Historical Society encourages the study of Australian History and promotes awareness of the history of the Kogarah Municipality.

Kogarah Historical Society, now in its 50th year, was founded in 1970 with aims:

• To encourage the study of Australian History and promote awareness of the history of the Kogarah Municipality.

• To seek to influence preservation of places of historical significance.

•To research and publish local history for the interest of our members and the wider community.

• To provide resources for his

torical study and research

•To undertake the collection of books, records, manuscripts and artefacts of historical significance to Kogarah

• To liaise with other societies for an interchange of information

To arrange speakers and displays, to conduct excursions to places of historical interest and to promote other social functions for the benefit of members, their friends and the general community.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 13 August in the School of Arts, Kogarah, starting at 2 pm.
A Hop, A Skip & a Jump: The History of Australian Childhood Amusements. That is the title of the presentation to be given by Warren Fahey AM, well known cultural historian, broadcaster, author of 30 books, all round entertainer. He will press your nostalgia button and make you remember the magic and make believe of your younger days. All welcome, no need to book. $5 entry includes our home cooked afternoon tea.

The next event at Carss Cottage is on Monday 27 July starting at 10 am. Morning tea outside in our courtyard ( weather permitting) then listen to Mark Skelsey, author, speak about the Victoria Street scandals - A View to Die for.
Carss Cottage is at 80 Carwar Ave, parking available. All welcome. Entry is only $5.00. You can also take the opportunity to look inside the Museum after the talk - check out new acquisitions and our current exhibition on Fashion trends through the ages.

Carss Cottage Museum (80, Carwar Ave) will be open tomorrow from 1 pm - 4 pm.
Trends in Fashion exhibition continuing plus all the other regular exhibits such as Cocky Bennett, the now stuffed parrot who lived for 119 years. His favourite saying was “If I had another b… feather I would fly”
Come and visit - $5 entry for adults but children free. We give children quizzes and stickers.

Carss Cottage Museum will be closed this Sunday. We apologise but have a shortage of volunteers at present. Please visit next weekend.

Our next meeting in the School of Arts Kogarah is on Thursday 9 July starting at 2 pm. The speaker is David Rosenberg on Pine Gap - Close to God’s ears, NSA Eavesdropping Memoirs. David is the author of a book with the same title and is a consultant to the Netflix series Pine Gap.
All those things you have wondered about this very secretive partnership between Australia and the United States revealed. Don’t miss it!

The next general meeting is on Thursday 11 June starting at 2 pm in the School of Arts ( cnr Bowns Rd/ Queens Ave) Our speaker is Robert Nash, Secretary of the Huguenot Society of Australia. He will tell us about”The Huguenots, the almost forgotten people”. Robert is descended from Huguenot silk weavers from Sedan in the Ardennes region of France. The Huguenots were French Protestants persecuted for their religious beliefs and were forced to flee to various other countries. It is believed that the term refugee was first associated with the Huguenots. Come and join us for an afternoon with a good speaker, good company and good afternoon tea. Only $5 entry. No need to book.

The next Monday at the Museum is on Monday 25 May starting at 10 am at Carss Cottage Museum.
After morning tea, our speaker will be Jimmy Thomson on The First Anzacs. These were the sappers ( combat engineers) and their contribution was accidentally written out of official records so went unrecorded for 100 years.
