Miracle mum Leanne recently shared the story of her daughter, Ruby, who was born at just 28 weeks.

When miracle mum, Leanne waters broke unexpectedly at 28+5 weeks, Ruby’s arrival by emergency c-section due to footling breech came as a complete shock after an otherwise uneventful pregnancy. What followed was 12 long weeks in NICU, navigating breathing, feeding, growth and heart challenges, before Ruby was later diagnosed with Noonan Syndrome. She eventually came home with a feeding tube while still learning to breastfeed.

During their NICU journey, Megan from Miracle Babies provided much-needed peer support and understanding during an incredibly emotional and exhausting time. Having someone who truly understood the challenges helped Ruby’s mum feel seen, supported and less alone.

"When I got to a Miracle Babies NurtureGroup it was a wave of relief. I felt like we belonged, it was a safe space full of joy & empathy. We have never looked back and I look forward to every session," - Leanne said.

Now, after a long and difficult journey, Ruby is flourishing and the family are proud Miracle Babies supporters. They credit the support, empathy and community they found through Miracle Babies as an important part of helping them through one of the hardest periods of their lives.

Like Ruby, many premature or critically ill babies are discharged home still requiring a feeding tube, while learning to breastfeed can often be a long and emotional journey. Through our Nurture E Information Hub, we provide families with information and support on both feeding tubes and breastfeeding to help them navigate this stage with confidence and reassurance. https://www.miraclebabies.org.au/content/information/gjmbm0

When baby Charlie spent time in the NICU at Canberra Hospital shortly after birth, his big brother Harry was doing his best to navigate a very different kind of start to life as a sibling.

During one of his visits to see Charlie, one of the wonderful NICU staff gave Harry one of the Newborn Intensive Care Foundation colouring books to help keep him occupied. What seemed like a simple gesture quickly became something incredibly special.

While staying with family, as Mum and Dad supported Charlie in the NICU, 5-year-old Harry stayed up late one night carefully colouring in a picture from the book. When he proudly showed his family his masterpiece, he explained it was a picture of “me, Mum and Charlie.”

He was so proud of his drawing that he has now asked for it to be framed, calling it “the first picture of us together.”
