Cambodian carved timber seated Buddhas displayed at eye height is a key to sacred placement. Elevation and respect. I’ve just learnt that the Buddha statues should ideally face East or North East. That will be my first job in the morning.

Into the Afterlife….this commemorative portrait at last complete. A dedication to the memory of ‘Scruff’ our baby galah rescued during the floods. We reared her cage free to rejoin her flock, which she did. She also returned home every couple of days to eat and rest on her perch. She sadly passed after a dog attack and inspired by Egyptian traditions I carved this portrait to honour her and guide her soul into the afterlife. She is still missed.

The Solomon Islands is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, expressed through intricate woodcarving, seafaring traditions, and ceremonial objects. Ceremonial food serving bowls called ‘Apira’ have a symbolic role in community feasts and social gatherings, symbolising hospitality, status, and the sharing of resources among families and villages. The Nguzu Nguzu is a carved ancestral spirit figure traditionally attached to the bow of canoes. Known as Toto isu, these striking carvings provide ancestral protection, guidance, and spiritual power during voyages and warfare, reflecting the deep connection between art, spirituality, and maritime life in the Solomon Islands. Vintage Nguzu Nguzu and Post 1960s Apira.

Another sneak peek into the glass cabinet. A unique collection of antique and vintage cultural pieces from China, Australia, Solomon Islands, Asia, Indonesia, West Timor and Japan. What an amazing world we live in and how brilliant are we humans to express our individuality and cultural identity through objects of beauty and reverence. Wow!
