These lands and waters, their spirit, was never ceded; their First People people systematically (almost) eradicated in the name of empire. Why on earth would we celebrate a date that represents so much pain for our First Australians? What does that say about our empathy if we do, while the wounds are still actively bleeding?
Today we mourn the history, recognise survival and honour the enduring fact that this was, and always will be, First People's land.
