Remember a while back when I was carving this piece? Well I took it downstairs to ink, along with the others and forgot all about it! 🤦🏻‍♀️
Thankfully asked me about this on the weekend and motivated me to ink and roll.
I loved this process and my mind started to wonder what I could do with layers of colour and other shapes.
This is the first of nine letters I’ll be sharing over the next little while. It’s part of my only unfinished project when I was studying design at last year, so I’m keen to finish and show you what this was all about.
If you have any questions just let me know. Happy to share what I’ve learned 👇🏼😊

I started a new job this week and besides loving it (🎉🎉 happy relief!), I’ve also been brain fried by the end of each day. So much so I’ve been too tired to create.🥱😴
That’s why I love the Perfectly Imperfect challenge and I created, because it means I haven’t beaten myself up that I haven’t created this week. 🙄😊Even though I’ve been itching to do so. Sorry peeps, I’ll be back soon!
Instead, on this lovely leap year day I’m prepping for my Learn Modern Lettering class tonight. 😍 It’s at the beautiful New Farm stationery store - you’ll want to buy all the things!
These names were lettered using ink made from powder and blending two colours. I also used a pointed pen which was so good to pick up after so long! See my stories for more of this delicious colour and watch this space for pics of the class tonight 😍😍

Finished!!! This is the hand painted version of the R I worked on in Procreate the other day. It was another great learning experience and a test of my brush skills. A close up will show you how far I have to go! 😜 Having said that, I’m still proud of this attempt and it will proudly sit in my office, which is nice because I don’t normally display my work 😊.
Another contribution for the challenge with and myself, . For the last week I’m ramping up to mural design!!! Let’s see what I can come up with 🎉

This beautiful sign is finished and I’m super proud of how it turned out. I learned SO MUCH doing this project for the delightful Hayley at Wattlebird Eco and collaborating with Liane of Brush and Pen Studio who painted the letters to perfection. 😍

This was pure joy from start to finish. It’s a decent size at 800mm wide by 600mm high, in marine grade ply and sealed to cope with the western sun.

Hayley’s office is in a gorgeous Queenslander home and this sign will hang out the front. It’s a perfect fit and a great example of working and sharing ideas with your client. I can’t wait to see it hanging up! 😍🎉😍🎉

Work in progress showing my half of a collaboration with Liane of for a street sign for the lovely Hayley of The artwork is being kept light so it blends into the timber a little as the text of the logo will go over the top. Really pleased to see this progress and I’m really proud of how this turned out!
Liane is doing the delicate sign writing and I’ve painted this detailed W flower. Will share as we get it finished so the client can se wot first 😍

From the student yesterday to the teacher today. I’m running my first lettering class for the year on a date we won’t see for another four years!
If you’re in Brisbane, I’d love you to join me as I take you through all the basic strokes and show you how to turn them into lovely letters and words. You’ll learn how to change pressure on your brush pens to create thick and thin strokes and will learn tips and tricks to critique your own work and keep practicing at home.
I keep class numbers small so I can give you personal feedback and help you get the most out of our three hours together. You’ll also get a 12-page workbook and pens to take home.
This is perfect for beginners, as well as anyone needing a refresher. And it’s at the gorgeous store where you can go crazy buying new stationery and goodies.
DM me or ask below if you have any questions and you can sign up with the link in my profile. I hope to see you there!

Today was my first attempt at Script style brush sign writing. 🎉 I’m actually very proud of this and can see where my calligraphy skills have come into play because I understand the letter forms. I found this more comfortable to do, even though I’d never done it before, than Casual.
And I also did more practice with my Casual lettering. The difference today is I had some coaching from the very talented and patient Liane She gave me a refresher session, paying attention to my brush skills, which is what this is all about.
I also realised I was holding the mahl stick all wrong, preventing me from completing some of the strokes. 🤦🏻‍♀️
I could not have improved this quickly without Liane’s coaching today. See her in action in my stories - so many skills! Thanks Liane - I’ll definitely be sleeping better tonight! 😂 😴
This practice is about me putting the imperfections and desire of a pretty feed aside to share my work in progress and what I’m learning as part of the Perfectly Imperfect Challenge which I created in partnership with . We’d love you to join us and share your work too - tag us both as well as so we can find you and cheer you on!

In the week of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to share a small glimpse of my most favourite calligraphy piece to date. 😍
Before Christmas, I had the delightful privilege of helping a lovely man propose to his sweetheart! 💍
He’d written a poem about their life and planned to read it as part of his proposal to her in Central Park, in New York. So romantic!
This piece was 350 words long and finished in A3. To say I was nervous finalising the last paragraph was an understatement!
It reminded me of the privilege of my work, to get to help with such special personal moments.
With their permission I’m sharing just the first and last lines. The rest of their story is just for them.
Wishing Luke and the most wonderful life together and thank you again for trusting me with such a precious gift.
I love my job! 😍❤️

My Casual sign writing practice continues. I tried yesterday in the humidity and had all sorts of trouble, so my friend and mentor Liane suggested I try a more glossy paper or glass. I tried the latter today and as she said “If you can paint on glass, you can paint on anything!” Well it’s fair to say I have a long way to go! The good news is I can see improvement over the last couple of days and my letters are starting to look a little consistent. Slow and steady....
I’m enjoying sharing my work as part of the Perfectly Imperfect challenge run by myself and and would love you to join us.

My first skill for our challenge is to get back into sign writing. That’s the art of painting letters with a brush and it’s a real skill.
If you saw in my stories, I haven’t wanted to share this with you because I use such negative talk to myself that it’s bad work, not good enough, embarrassing, and on it goes.
But despite the frustration and knowing there’s 1000 things wrong with this, I’m sharing anyway. That’s one of the reasons I created this challenge with - because I wasn’t sharing my work or even starting some work because it had to be perfect. But it could never be - especially if I’m not giving it a crack!
So here it is in all its rawness and my awkwardness sharing it with you.
If I can do it, so can you. Please share your perfectly imperfect work too and tag us - and as well as

About Me

the face behind Brush & Flourish. Drawing and lettering has always been in my blood. I was that kid at school who had the beautiful headings in her assignments, and you could often find a drawing or two in my diary and workbooks.

I took a break for a few years and now not a day goes by that I'm not creating. What that means for you is I can teach you what I know through my lettering classes, or I can help you further develop your brand, your business, your home or gift a loved one with something unique and special.

Get in touch and let me know how I can help you.
