Did you name it before slide two?

Viola hederacea, or Native Violet, is the ground cover that quietly does your weeding for you. Runners creep out sideways and knit together into a dense green carpet, and once that soil is covered, weeds simply do not get a look in.

The best part is where it thrives. Part shade to full shade, so all those tricky spots where grass has given up. Under trees. Along the shaded fence line. That strip beside the path you have stopped trying with. Keep the soil moist and it will fill in fast.

It also happens to be one of the prettiest things you can tuck between pavers, with little purple and white flowers popping up almost year round. Fancy cafes use them as a garnish on cakes, which tells you something.

The biggest mistake people make when planting a new garden? Spacing based on the pot size, not the mature size.

That tiny 20cm pot in your hand is going to triple in width over time. If you plant too close, your plants end up competing for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients while cutting off essential airflow.

A quick guide for your next project:

• Lilly Pilly: 60cm to 1m apart for a tight, formal hedge, or 1 to 1.5m for a softer screening look.
• Heliconias: Around 1m apart to get that lush, tropical, layered feel.
• Magnolias: Around 1.2 to 1.5m apart when building a privacy screen.

Your garden style should always drive your spacing strategy. Need a solid wall of green? Space them tight. Want privacy while keeping individual shapes? Go a bit wider. Showing off a feature plant? Give it plenty of room to shine.

Plant tags lie. Here is how sunlight levels actually work:

☀️ Full Sun: 6+ hours of direct sun, or even 4 hours if it’s that scorching mid-afternoon heat.
⛅ Part Shade: Under 6 hours of direct sun with protection from afternoon heat.
🌿 Full Shade / Bright Indirect: 1 to 2 hours of soft morning sun, filtered light through tree leaves, or bright room light.

Pro tip: Stand in your planting spot a few times throughout the day and check if the sun hits you directly. That tells you what you are actually working with!

The ultimate "set and forget" plant for low-maintenance garden spaces. 🌱

If councils use Lomandra ‘Lime Tough’ on highway medians and petrol station garden beds, you know it can handle pretty much anything you throw at it:

Five plants we recommend on repeat, and not one of them is a maybe.

South East Queensland is a lot to ask of a garden. Humidity, storms that dump a month of rain in an afternoon, weeks of hot sun, then nothing at all. Plenty of plants cope for a season. These five actually hold up.
