Two midweek facts about Bin Chicken Books 📚

💚 I started Bin Chicken Books because my (huge) personal collection of Global Literature was getting a little too big for my living space, and I wanted to share all the amazing titles with people who would really love them (particularly as an Egyptian whose collection is enhanced by trips to Cairo and the amazing titles that are available there and not here; Egyptian and more generally SWANA English language and translated lit), rather than subjecting them to a slow demise in landfill (yes I talk about books like they are sentient beings).

💚 Bin Chicken Books popped into my head on a sleepless night not long after my first child was born! Bin Chicken because - well BIN CHICKENS ARE ICONIC... and somewhat accurately (through no fault of their own) known as scavengers. So obviously One Chook's Trash is Another Chook's Treasure because preloved books! But also, the Ibis, the magestic Ibis, was actually considered to be the earthly incarnation of the ancient Egyptian god Thoth - god of Wisdom and Writing. Look how nicely all that tied in together with Australia and Egypt and books and symbolism and word play (oh gawd, I am a word nerd), and might I say a rare positive consequence of early parenthood sleep deprivation!

BCB has seen quite a few iterations over the last 6 years, from online to market stalls, to a physical store to online again! All I can say is - to the regular book chooks, thank you for sticking with Bin Chicken Books, your support means so much to me 💚💚 for the one off or new book chooks, you are amazing for trusting a small (tiny) one woman business with your bookish needs!

Ending this gushy drama with a beautiful stack of Arabic literature, and a reminder that when we consume Global, including Arabic and especially Palestinian literature from the comfort and safety of our homes, while a genocide is ongoing and a war criminal is warmly welcomed, we are doing so with privilege and we all have a responsibility to oppressed people, to support their resistance and do what we can to see the end of illegal occupation, white supremacy and facism disguised as political diplomacy.
