This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Health Promotion Officers Kelly Hart and Gillian Duffy to chat about the importance of breast screening.

BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast (BSQSC) are raising awareness to close the gap in breast screening rates to encourage more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to attend their breast screening. Their Sista Shawl project uses beautiful Yarn scarves with artwork by local Sunshine Coast artist, Aboriginal Darug woman of the Cabrogal Clan, Mandy Draper (Deadly Dot Pots). Funded by Wishlist (Sunshine Coast Health Foundation), the artwork “A Woman’s Connection” has been chosen to start conversations in the community about the importance of women’s health and breast screening.

Who can wear First Nations artwork?

The most frequent question we get asked at Yarn is “who can purchase and wear Yarn products?” Working with First Nations artwork, we’re regularly asked if it’s appropriate for non-Indigenous people to wear Indigenous artwork. So who can wear Yarn products?

Let’s get into it…

The short answer is EVERYONE can wear Yarn Corp! All our products are ally-friendly - as long as you’re being respectful and supportive. Each artist working with Yarn Corp has given permission for anyone to wear and showcase their art. It’s important to note that this is unique to our catalogue, and does not represent all Indigenous art, some of which is only for Community.

We encourage everyone to learn the story behind each purchase: we want people to learn about the artist, their story, and the story behind each artwork. We also encourage people to keep learning about First Nations Culture and to open conversations around it. Reconciliation is everyone’s business and we believe art can be a powerful tool to bring people together.

All our products are designed to be worn and showcased with pride. It’s a fun and powerful way to show the beauty and uniqueness of the oldest Culture in the world, no matter your cultural background. Be part of important conversations that help to keep First Nations Cultures alive.

Does choosing Australian-made products make a difference in your workplace? 🦘

We’re hugely proud of our ranges. Our Meanjin (Brisbane) studio doesn’t just help us offer one of the fastest delivery times for custom First Nations uniforms in Australia, but we also create local employment and training opportunities.

We know it’s not always possible in this day and age to keep everything on-shore, but we believe that where we can we should. Offering screen printing, embroidery, transfer printing, and Direct-To-Garment services on-shore is one of the ways we get to give back to our community. It’s one more level of pride we like to take in providing top-quality uniforms and merchandise.

Last week we talked about Yarn's design process, showing you all how artworks become garments. This week we are going to turn our focus to the process of printing these garments. All of our screen printed products are printed here in Brisbane by our talented printing specialists. Traditional silk sc...

We are so excited to announce our new collection that celebrates and honours our incredible native fauna - while also helping to protect it. With artworks by Yorta Yorta, Wamba Wamba, Dja Dja Wurrung and Kamilaroi woman, Merring-Jippa Murray, this Yarn Raise collection is presented in partnership with Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC).

Every sale in this collection of t-shirts, tea towels, calendars, and mugs donates $2 to the extraordinary work of AWC. Discover the range here:
https://www.yarn.com.au/pages/australia-wildlife-conservancy

This range is also proudly ! 🇦🇺 Our tea towels, mugs, and t-shirts are all printed right here in our Meanjin studio, promoting local employment and training opportunities.

Unfortunately, our wildlife faces significant threats, namely due to the introduction of invasive species and the loss of Traditional burning patterns by Aboriginal people that prevented disastrous wildfires. AWC is a global leader in conservation who protect Australian native animals and the habitats in which they live.

Through support from donors and partnerships with Indigenous groups, governments and landholders, AWC owns, manages or works across sites throughout Australia. Their network of wildlife sanctuaries–in regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, central Australia and the Top End–protect some of our most iconic and endangered wildlife.

The Marsupial of the Year vote has been hotting up here at Yarn. Of course, we’ve been having some hard debates over our favourite marsupials. Yet still, there was no stopping some team members from voting for the cuddly koala. Who can blame them?

You can vote for Marsupial of the Year here:

We’ve got an exciting launch coming this week, celebrating and protecting Australia’s striking and precious fauna! We can wait to share more information soon.

Introducing our new Tribe of Women collection!

This beautiful artwork is by Bunuba and Gija artist Eulalia Martin and speaks on the power of women supporting women.

In our Yarn Corp store, we now have a range of polos available in this design, all of which are customisable with your company logo. In partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), we’re excited to be donating $2 for every custom item sold to support world-class research.

“The colours represent skin colours, circles represent women of all different shapes, ages, sizes, our Mothers, grandmothers, daughters, relatives friendships. Women who love and support us through any area of life.” - Eulalia

These images were photographed in Kununurra in The Kimberly, WA by local photographer, Tim Lanzon at Timbee Photography The shoot features Eulalia herself with her own tribe of women. As well as showcasing the beauty of this design, Tim also captures the magnificence of this region with the true grace it deserves.

Have you checked your breasts recently?

With Pink Month fast approaching, we aim to raise more awareness about breast cancer.

Checking your breasts regularly can help you become more familiar with your anatomy and help you spot small changes earlier. Early detection creates many more opportunities for treatment, which can be life-saving.

Our Boobie Sista campaign in partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation is raising money as well as awareness. So far, we have raised $4,634 of our $10,000 goal! This money helps fund world-class research to support NBCF’s vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. We have a huge range of uniforms and workplace merchandise in our Boobie Sista range that create important conversations (like this one!) that, ultimately, save lives!
https://corporate.yarn.com.au/collections/story-boobie-sista

Head over to our blog or the NBCF’s website for more information on checking your breasts.

https://www.yarn.com.au/blogs/yarn-in-the-community/breast-check-guide

Early detection gives you the best chance of successful breast cancer treatment. So take the time to get to know how your breasts look and feel normally, as this can help you notice changes sooner.

Today marks the anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This document was adopted into the general assembly in 2007 and is the most detailed international document on the rights of Indigenous peoples.

It establishes a universal framework of minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the Indigenous peoples of the world. It is particularly significant because Indigenous peoples, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, were involved in its drafting. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States initially voted against the bill but have since pledged their support. It’s a moment to reflect on Australia's journey towards becoming a reconciliation nation.

On this day, we celebrate the diversity, endurance and determination of the world’s Indigenous Cultures.
