$12,000 fine for illegal mud crab possession
Mud crabs in a box.
A recreational Brisbane fisher has been convicted of 5 offences under the Fisheries Act 1994 and fined $12,000 for illegal possession of undersized and female mud crabs and for exceeding the recreational limit.
The charges arose from an early morning interception in June 2024, when Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officers stopped a vehicle and vessel near the Logan River, then completed a subsequent search of the fisher’s property.
A total of 7 female mud crabs, 27 undersized male mud crabs and 4 male mud crabs over the recreational limit were uncovered.
Since 12 May 2025, QBFP has recorded more than $61,100 in major penalties and prosecutions found guilty in court, and $85,699 in on-the-spot Fisheries Infringement Notices for mud crab-related offences statewide.
The message is simple and the consequences are real – if you lift someone else’s pots or take crabs outside the rules, you will be caught and face serious penalties.
