Who doesn't love the scent of a flower? At the moment my yard is filled with the scent of jasmine as it blooms. However my favorite would have to be rose. It's so classic and transports me to some romantic French shabby chic chateau.

So how do we turn floral plants into material into a workable perfuming material…

Distilation- the use of steam to extract the essential and aromatic components of most essential oils.

Cold press/ expression - great for citrus. The peel is pressed to extract the aromatics withing the skin.

Co2 extract- my favorite as it is creates a raw material as close to the scent of the natural products.

Solvent extraction- reserved for delicate complex flowers like jasmine and rose, which makes a thicker more fuller material called an absolute compared to essential oil. Petals are washed with an alcohol like hexane or ethanol, the aromatics infuse the solvent, then filtered and put to evaporation resulting in an absolute or concrete’. No hexane or ethanol remain in the final product.

Enfleurage- very labourous and not as commonly used like the above methods. Animal lard or vegetable oil is spread out, flower petals are placed on the fat and gradually the aromatic parts or the flowers infuse the fat. The fat is then washed with an alcohol (the process is then like solvent extraction) to create an absolute.

Natural Isolates- one gathered from the above methods are then further broken down to their desired singular isolate by fractionated distillation.
