The Utility Society

The Utility Society The Utility Society is an online store specialising in useful products for people.

The Utility Society is based on a simple premise and passion, providing ‘useful products for people’. Utility is all about usefulness, the ability to satisfy a particular need and being beneficial to you as a consumer and user of that product. The Utility Society mission is to provide you with products that are designed for everyday living, products that are satisfying to use and full of utility.

We have a growing range of products approved by The Utility Society that fit into your lifestyle, with a focus on kitchenware for the budding master chef at home, and useful products for about the home. Form, function and utility are key criteria for any products approved by The Utility Society, but these must also uphold to our values. The Utility Society value of ‘useful products for people’ is about the quality of a product and its inherent usefulness, but it goes further than that to be beneficial to our customers and society. We believe products need to be durable and built to last, products that do not need to be bought often and products that offer a better alternative to wasteful single-use products. Utility refers to the satisfaction received from using or consuming a good, but as consumers we also need to be more conscious of how a product came to be, and to that end, The Utility Society vision for the future is to create better choices for consumers as a leading provider of useful and sustainable products. All of this will only be possible with your support, and we hope you can follow us on our journey.

The perfect Sunday brunch. Home made cured salmon with eggs and crème fraiche dill sauce.

Made with beetroot for the extra pop of beautiful colour.

This is a really simple recipe. To make the cure use 50/50 sea salt and sugar mix. The sugar mixture used here is half brown, half white.

Then add your herbs and spices. I have used a bunch of dill, coriander seeds, crushed juniper berries, black pepper corns, lemon zest and orange zest.

Add the beetroot last as the salt will draw out the purple liquid very quickly. Optional: add a few shots of gin or vodka.

Toss the mixture together and then cover the salmon. Then place salmon skin side up and make sure all the flesh is submerged in the cure. Make sure the container has high sides because the cure will draw water from the salmon.

Cover with cling film and place a heavy weight on top. Cure for 48-72 hours in the fridge.

Once cured, rinse off ingredients and pat dry. You can eat it immediately and to store wrap in cling film and keep air tight. Will keep for a week in the fridge but you’ll probably eat it all before then! Enjoy!

Our take on a delicious Prawn Linguine. 😋

Prep chopped garlic, lemon zest, chilli, tomatoes and parsley.

With olive oil and butter base, add prepped ingredients, cooking slowly to infuse flavours.

Add half a tin of quality chopped tomatoes and stir in to emulsify the sauce, and then season. Slowly simmer.

Add prawns 1-2 minutes before the linguine is ready.

Toss sauce and linguine together.

Finish with basil and parmesan. Enjoy!

Check out a new recipe from The Utility Society. This Roasted Butternut Squash with goat cheese and dukkah is a delicious main vegetarian dish with a salad, or goes perfectly as tasty side dish for a dinner party (or any dinner). 😋

- Slice the Butternut Squash in half.
- Add oil and season with salt, chilli and paprika.
- Place face side down in roasting tin.
- Set oven to 200c / 392f for 1 hour or until skin is caramelised.
- Flip it, gently flatten it and put it back in the oven for 10 mins.
- Let rest for 5 mins and then add goat cheese (or feta) and drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar glaze ( or - splash regular balsamic is fine too).
Enjoy!
