Last week audiences were treated with a delectable mix of stories, live performances from Robert’s back catalogue, and readings from his debut novel, Songwriters on the Run.

The book takes readers through Australia’s independent music scene and is hilarious, profound, and intimate all in one.

‘Completely marvellous! Couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. You’ll swear he wrote it just for you. Ain’t no world in which Robert effing Forster missed his calling, but, damn, the bloke was born to write books.’ TRENT DALTON

TOMORROW (23/4) — Hear Stephanie Smee in conversation with Caroline Baum at The Royal Oak! Translated into English for the first time by Stephanie Smee, Claire Berest’s Frida is winner of ELLE FRANCE’S GRAND PRIX DES LECTRICES, capturing Frida Kahlo’s life in words as vibrantly and passionately as her paintings. It’s a striking fictional imagining of one of the world’s most eccentric women: Frida Kahlo.

At our very first event focusing on translated fiction, we present the rare opportunity to hear from Stephanie Smee in person on Thursday April 23rd at The Royal Oak in Balmain. Stephanie will not only be discussing the process of translating Frida, but also — joined in conversation with Caroline Baum — the wider implications of translation fiction’s growing popularity in the Australian literary landscape.

Don’t miss out on a very special event to hear from the woman who helped Claire Berest bring Frida to life. Purchase your tickets now through the link in our bio.

You may have seen Cynthia Banham’s fantastic reflections on her trip to Italy, as well as her interior and exterior world as a mother with a disability in the latest issue of the Good Weekend.

Cynthia Banham will join Paul Daley at The East Village Hotel on Thursday 30th April to discuss her memoir, Mother Shadow, which opens with the uncovering of a family secret. Stories about mothers and children are powerful because they hold magnitudes of gentleness and cruelty, of resilience and weakness — sometimes separately, sometimes simultaneously. Mother Shadow is that kind of story, except Cynthia has written it like a thriller.

“It’s a metaphor for looking after everything,” Rosalie Ham says of her book, Look After Your Feet, in an interview with The Age. “Balance, strength, and the state of your feet. My parents had terrible feet, because of the war and the Depression and getting everyone else’s shoes.”

After 6 novels, Rosalie Ham has turned to writing non-fiction. Looking After Your Feet is a prevent look at the darkly funny experience of getting older. On Wednesday 29th April at Red Mill Distillery, Rosalie discusses — with Caroline Baum — a book that is brilliant, funny, honest all in one. It celebrates the accumulation of wisdom with age, and is peppered with practical advice about all sorts of things.
