Mama’s, maybe your battery just needs a little recharge. 🌿

Tomorrow, we’re making room for the beautiful chaos of motherhood.

The prams.
The feeds.
The cold cuppas.
The interrupted conversations.
The running on 10% some days.

Petals & Prams was created as a little space to fill your own cup too. To get out of the house, connect with other mamas, create with flowers and hopefully leave feeling a little more recharged than when you arrived.

Our very first session is tomorrow, and it’s completely casual.

Pop in anytime between 10:30am–12pm. Stay for 30 minutes or stay for an hour, whatever works around you and your little love.

Each week we’ll create a different mini floral arrangement, with all materials provided and cuppas waiting.

Before anyone walks through our doors, the workshop has already begun. 🌿

I didn’t always understand that. I used to arrive at our workshops rushing. Running late, setting up quickly, carrying the chaos of the morning or the day straight through the doors with me. Then I’d welcome these beautiful souls into our space and invite them to slow down.

To breathe.
To ground.
To be present.
To trust themselves and allow their creativity to flow.

And sometimes I’d wonder why it took a while for the room to settle. Why there was hesitation or those “I can’t bloody do it” moments. Until I realised…

I was asking them to arrive somewhere I hadn’t arrived myself. I couldn’t guide a room into calm while I was still carrying urgency. So I changed the way I arrive. Now I give myself time. I prepare our space slowly. I breathe, ground myself and become present before anyone walks through the door.

And I acknowledge what we’re about to create with.

The harakeke.
The flowers.
The foliage.
The little treasures from the land that have made their way into our hands.

I give thanks for them.

Because they aren’t just materials. They’ve grown from land. They’ve been nurtured, harvested, gathered, dried or preserved before finding their way to us.

And our harakeke carries its own tikanga and whakapapa that deserves to be acknowledged and respected.

That small shift has changed something in our experiences.

The room feels softer.
The people seem more settled.
The creativity flows more naturally.
There are still plenty of “Hmm… where should this flower go?” moments, but there’s less pressure, less blockage and more trust in themselves.

And it taught me something I’ll carry with me:

Before I can hold space for others, I have to arrive in that space myself. Sometimes holding space isn’t about what you say or what you teach.

It’s how you prepare.
How you acknowledge.
How you give thanks.
How you arrive.

Because the energy we bring through the door becomes part of what we create together. 🌿

Last night was everything we love about our little creative space. 🌿

Our booked out Book Floral Experience brought together besties, book lovers and beautiful souls for an evening of slowing down, connecting and creating.

We began by grounding ourselves and settling into the space, before the books opened, the florals came out and everyone found their own creative flow.

There was yarns, cuppas, plenty of laughs, conversations about favourite books and that beautiful quiet that happens when everyone becomes completely absorbed in what they’re creating.

And the finished pieces…
Same materials. Same experience. Yet every single book told its own story and reflected the person who created it. That is one of our favourite parts of what we do.

For us, these experiences have never been about making something perfect. They’re about giving ourselves permission to slow down, connect with self and others and leave carrying an arrangement we’re proud to say, “I made that.”

Thank you to everyone who spent their Friday evening with us and brought such beautiful energy into our space. We hope you loved being here as much as we loved having you.

Another full table, another evening of connection, creativity and soulfulness at Marama Flax Creations.

Before we sit together to weave, there is work that happens first. 🌿

Today was harvesting day, preparing our harakeke for Saturday’s Weaving What Matters workshop.

For me, harvesting harakeke is never simply about gathering a material to create with. There is tikanga, intention and respect in the process, acknowledging where our harakeke comes from and the treasure we have the privilege of working with.

And on Saturday, I get the privilege of sharing a little piece of my culture with our community.

Teaching people how to weave with harakeke, sharing the yarns that sits alongside it, and watching hands that may have never woven before create their putiputi (flower) of their own. These are the moments that mean a lot to me.

We’re not only weaving harakeke, we’re weaving connection, culture and community.

Maybe you don’t need another mums group.
Maybe you just need somewhere to be. 🌿

A space where mums can walk in with their babies, prams, messy mornings and everything that comes with motherhood… and just be.

No pressure to have it all together.
No pressure to know anyone.
No pressure to even be creative.

Just somewhere to get out of the house, have an adult conversation, meet another mum, create with flowers and breathe for a little while.

And that’s where Petals & Prams came from. 🤎

Every Tuesday morning, we’re opening our little studio for mums and their pēpi/bubs to pop in, slow down and create with our harakeke/flax, dried and preserved flowers.

Your baby might sleep the whole time.
They might need feeding.
They might cry.
You might only get half your creation finished…
But, It’s all welcome here.

The flowers are part of the experience, but Petals & Prams is about so much more. It’s a space to create, connect and find a little time for ourselves amongst the beautiful busyness of motherhood.

Miss K has been creating again, and she’s made our very first Bunnings Arrangement… a little bit rustic, a little bit beautiful and definitely made for the bloke who appreciates a trip to Bunnings.

Perfect for Dad, Hubby, Pop… or that man who somehow always finds a reason to “just pop into Bunnings.”

This one is available in our studio now, but we’d love to create more for Father’s Day! Choose his favourite colours and we can create something especially for him.

I’m honoured to be sharing Māori putiputi weaving alongside Paula Harrison, who will be sharing her local Gunaikurnai knowledge and weaving practices.

A beautiful opportunity to sit together, work with natural fibres, share yarns and learn about weaving through both Māori and First Nations perspectives.

This is what we wanted our studio to be, not just somewhere we create, but somewhere people gather.

Sometimes the work is to create.
Sometimes the work is to return to the places that fill us.

This weekend, that place is Tangaroa. 🌊

No workshops.
No markets.
No studio.
No flowers.

Just time beside the moana, surrounded by the same te taiao that inspires so much of what we create at Marama Flax Creations.

Te harakeke.
Te whenua.
Te ngahere.
Te moana.

These are treasures we’re lucky enough to live amongst… places that ground us, restore us and remind us that we are part of something much bigger than our work/business.

Out of the studio today and tomorrow, filling our own kete before we return to creating again on Tuesday.

Harakeke (flax) doesn’t just arrive on our table ready to become something beautiful.

There’s a whole process before the creating even begins.

We select the rau (leaf) carefully.
We karakia.
We harvest with intention.
We never cut the rito, the baby at the centre of the plant.
We prepare, strip, soften and work each rau by hand before it ever becomes a putiputi (flower).

And even then, harakeke has a mind of its own.

No two rau behave the same. Some bend beautifully. Some are stubborn. Some decide they’re going in a completely different direction than what we had planned.

That’s part of working with a natural material.

For us, it’s never about forcing harakeke into something perfect. It’s learning how to work with it. Then slowly, one rau at a time, it becomes something new.

A putiputi.
A bouquet.
A timeless treasure that will sit in someone’s home, be carried down an aisle, gifted to someone they love, or mark a moment they’ll remember forever.

That’s why we’ll probably always talk about the process just as much as the finished creation. Because the beauty isn’t only in what harakeke becomes.
