This one hits differently for me as I grew up in care.
I've seen what happens when children are raised by systems instead of relationships.
Children need more than a bed, food, and workers coming and going.
They need someone who knows them.
Someone who stays.
Someone who loves them, even on the hard days.
I've worked with children, adults, and families for years now, and one thing has never changed.
People don't remember services.
They remember relationships.
They remember the people who showed up.
They remember whether they felt like they belonged.
No child under five should be growing up in residential care if there is another option.
Children need attachment, consistency, and connection in those early years.
They need family.
Not perfect families.
Just people who genuinely care and who are there tomorrow, next month, and next year.
This is a positive step, but there is still a lot of work to do.
Every child deserves more than safety.
Every child deserves to know they matter and where they belong.
