On this day in 1987, the Midnight Oil album “Diesel and Dust” debuted on the Australian charts at #1 (August 24)

Midnight Oil spent several months in mid-1986 on the Blackfella/Whitefella Tour of outback Australia with indigenous music groups Warumpi Band and Gondwanaland, playing to remote Aboriginal communities.

The experience had a profound effect on the band members, inspiring the “Diesel and Dust” album, focusing on the need for awareness and recognition by Australia of past injustices involving First Nations people and the need for reconciliation.

Long-term bass player Peter Gifford left the band before the album's release allegedly due to the Oils’ extensive touring schedules, and was replaced by Bones Hillman, formerly of New Zealand band The Swingers.

“Diesel and Dust” peaked at #1 on the Australian albums charts for six weeks, and also topped the charts in Canada and New Zealand, #5 in Sweden, #7 in Switzerland, #13 in Germany, #14 in the Netherlands, #19 in the UK, #21 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart.

“Beds Are Burning" from the album was their biggest international hit single, peaking at #1 in Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, Top 5 in Belgium, France and the Netherlands, #6 in Australia and the UK, and #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

At the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) 1988 Awards ceremony, Midnight Oil won "Best Cover Art" for Diesel and Dust. It also won "Best Single" and "Best Song" for "Beds Are Burning".

Rolling Stone editors named it the best album of 1988 (the year of its United States release), and later ranked it the 13th greatest record of the 1980s.

In October 2010, Diesel and Dust was listed at #1 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums, and in December of 2021, the album was listed at #5 in Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘200 Greatest Albums of All Time’.

BETTER OFF DEAD TURNS 41!

It’s been 41 years since Better Off Dead hit theaters in 1985, giving us one of the wonderfully weird and unforgettable teen comedies of the ’80s!

Starring John Cusack as Lane Meyer, the film mixed teenage heartbreak, dark comedy, skiing, bizarre neighbours and some truly surreal moments into one cult classic.

And of course, who could ever forget that determined paperboy and his legendary demand:

“I want my two dollars!”

More than four decades later, Better Off Dead remains a favourite for ’80s movie fans and a perfect example of just how strange, funny and original comedies could be back then.

On this day in 1980, Gary Numan’s “I Die: You Die” entered the UK Singles Chart at #8.

Released just ahead of his Telekon album, the track built on the anthemic style of “We Are Glass,” with driving guitars layered by Numan’s signature synths.
The single climbed to #6 the following week, though curiously it wasn’t included on the original UK vinyl of Telekon (it appeared on cassette and international editions instead).

Lyrically, Numan turned his pen on the hostile music press of the time, with lines like “They crawl out of their holes for me / And I die you die”. The B-side featured Denis Haines’ haunting piano version of “Down in the Park.”

On this day in 1982, the INXS single “The One Thing” debuted on the Australian charts at #42 (August 23)

The lead single released ahead of their third studio album “Shabooh Shoobah” peaked at #14 on the Australian charts.

"The One Thing" brought INXS their first Top 40 hit in the US, reaching #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May–June 1983, and was also a Top 20 hit in Canada.

The music video (which included Young Doctors actress and Australian Pl***oy’s first centrefold Karen Pini) was their first video to air on the fledgling MTV, and went into high rotation on the channel, which added to the chart success of the single in the US.

Tim Farriss recalled:

“We made a crazy video at home in Australia for ‘The One Thing.”
We fed va**um to a few cats and had them running around a table while we had a feast with sexy models and Pl***oy centerfolds, ripping apart a turkey.

Next thing we knew we had a top 40 hit in America and were opening for Adam Ant!”
