The Breath of the Masters (of Unorthodox Jazz) is the name Barabbas gave the aerophonic duo with Alaeddin Adlernest (Horst Brückl) on bassoon and himself on saxophone. Smile was recorded live at Jazzspelunke, Vienna, on 28 April 1982.

Claus Mayrhofer Barabbas a.k.a. Harun Ghulam Barabbas (1943‒2009) was a visual artist and musician. Even before he moved to Bali in 1986 and eventually settled in Australia, Barabbas clearly stood out in the art scene in post-war Austria with his transcultural mentality. His main concern was the “timeless exploration of the unmeasurable”, for which he coined the term “OVERGROUND”. By this he meant a way of life that embraces relaxation, a subtle spirituality, unity in art and the desire to integrate that art into all spheres of life.

Barabbas: “I try with both (music and painting) to touch and reveal the essential.”

He was a member of the legendary Masters of Unorthodox Jazz and the founder of the free jazz ensembles Public Music, Rhythm & Breath, Athanor, M’Boom, Starlight, and The Breath of the Masters.

Alaeddin Adlernest (Horst Brückl, 1940‒2017) was a classically trained musician and an improviser (bassoon, bass clarinet). In 1960 he became a bassoonist of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. From the early 1960s onwards he also started playing in Vienna’s free jazz scene, first as a member of the Masters of Unorthodox Jazz and later joining the Reform Art Unit.

The Breath of The Masters

„The Breath of The Masters of Unorthodox Jazz“ nannte Barabbas das aerophone (Saxophon und Fagott) Zusammenspiel seiner selbst und Alaeddin Adlernest (Horst Brückl). „Smile“ wurde am 28. April 1982 in der Wiener Jazzspelunkte aufgenommen.

Claus Mayrhofer Barabbas, auch Harun Ghulam Barabbas genannt (geb. 1943, gest. 2009).

1940, gest.

Liner notes:

Claus Mayrhofer Barabbas (*1943 in Vienna, Austria, †2009 in Bendigo, Australia)

At the age of 15 he met Padhi Frieberger, dropped out of school, discovered that he was an artist and named himself Barabbas after the Biblical rebel. By the 1960s and 1970s he had become one of the most paradigmatic artists in the Vienna scene. Amid the stifled and tentative reconstruction climate of post-war Vienna, the long-haired, colourfully dressed eccentric moved through the grey streets, painted brightly coloured pictures and played bizarre free jazz.

He was self-taught as a painter and musician and used both art forms to pursue a single goal – he wanted to sensitise the people around him and, as he said, lead them on an ecstatic path to the centre to become one with oneself and the world.

To quote Barabbas: “I try with both (music and painting) to touch and reveal the essential. In painting I have enough time to keep working until I reach my goal. In music it is what it is: if it comes, it comes; if it doesn’t come, it doesn’t.”

As a member and co-founder of the legendary Masters of Unorthodox Jazz, Barabbas’ music is as important to music history as his visual work is to art history in Austria.

A Few Interesting Facts about Barabbas and his Music

In the 1960s Claus Mayrhofer Barabbas aka Harun Ghulam Barabbas co-founded the free jazz formation Masters of Unorthodox Jazz (MoUJ) together with Alaeddin Adlernest (Horst Brückl), Walter Malli and Richard Pechoc, with Anton Michlmayr joining later.

On November 3, 1968, Sunny Murray invited Barabbas to join his band for a concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The Masters played at the Museum of the 20th Century (several concerts between 1968 and 1971) and the arts centre IKZ, among others.

MoUJ recorded the first Austrian free jazz album, Overground, in 1969. Financed by Barabbas and released on his label (Barabbas Records Reichenau/Rax), it was well received on the radio (Lothar Knessl, Walter Richard Langer), on television and by the press (Peter Baum, Ruediger Engerth, Claus Pack, Karlheinz Roschitz).

Thelonious Monk and MoUJ double bill at the Vienna Konzerthaus on December 13, 1969, with the Masters playing the first part of the concert.

In 1972 the record Vienna Jazz Avantgarde, a collaborative project of MoUJ and RAU (Reform Art Unit), was released.

1974: music by MoUJ in the film Das Zimmer der Sophie Baier by Toni Michlmayr.

Around 1975 MoUJ gradually lost momentum and disappeared.

From 1973 onwards Barabbas formed new bands:
Public Music: Barabbas, Adlernest, Geier, Koglmann, and Malli.
Rhythm & Breath (from 1975 onwards): Barabbas, Markus Pillhofer, Sepp Mitterbauer, Fritz Kotrba, Helmuth Kemptner.
Athanor: The group played as a duo (Barabbas, Malli), trio (Barabbas, Malli, Pechoc), and occasionally with Adlernest, Markus Pillhofer, and Josef Traindl.
Barabbas also initiated the groups M’Boom, Starlight, and The Breath of the Masters.
