Have you ever wondered about the coffee cherry? Is the coffee cherry a similar taste to coffee as we know it?
As you probably already know, coffee is grown on a tree. What you might not know, however, is that this tree produces fragrant white blossoms (similar in scent to jasmine). They turn into green, berry-like cherries. When they are ripe, they become a ruby red, indicating they’re ready to be picked.
The cherries don't have the "coffee flavour" that we are familiar with, as this only appears at the roasting stage. A ripe coffee cherry has a pleasant aroma and flavour.
They are closest in description to a grape. The cherry fruit's outer skin is tough and bitter, but on the inside you can find juicy, sweet flesh and underneath it a slimy layer which protects the best thing underneath it, the bean.
Coffee is grown in various regions, climates, and cultivation methods that give vastly different flavour profiles.
