6 SECRETS OF GARLIC PRODUCTION IN AFRICA.
# Garlic(Allium Sativum) is one of the rarely, yet most profitable onions that is easy to grow!
# Anyone can grow it so long one follows its do's and don'ts.
# Following are the secrets behind success in producing a successful crop:
1. Planting Season:- Garlic does well when planted in the right season. In Zambia, the best time to plant Garlic is from Late February- Early July. This is so since Garlic bulbs grow better and thrives best with lower temperatures in winter. Other seasons would produce poor small bulbs with less natural sap.
2. Planting Method:- Garlic is best planted after separating cloves from bulbs and later planted by inserting or pushing the cloves(small divisions that make a bulb) into the soil. It is however, best to peel the cloves by removing covers. This ensures best quality seeds as rotten ones will easily be identified and thrown away. Peeling also encourages quick germination and emergence.
Peeled Garlic germinates within 4-5 days compared to the unpeeled that may take 10-20 days depending on soil type and irrigation frequency and efficiency. The best spacing is 5-8 cm between plants and 30cm between rows.
3.Nutrition:-Garlic is a heavy feeder crop as such, it needs proper nutrition from planting to harvest. Soil must be enriched with animal manures or poultry manure@ the rate of 5kg/ square metre and 150-200 g/ square metre respectively. This should be incorporated into the soil at least 10 days prior to planting.
2 weeks after emergence, give Animal Liquid manure fertilizer @ 10 litres/ square metre as growth booster.
At week 7-8 add either well made compost @ 3-5kg/ square metre or chicken manure Liquid feed for bulb enhancement.
This should be accompanied by mulching which must have been there from planting for better phosphoric usage and sulphur intake- essential elements in enlarging bulbs.
4. Crop Protection:- Garlic does not need any spraying of any kind as it has self disease and insect repellent qualities.
5.Best drying Method:- Garlic usually gets ready for harvest after 12-16 weeks after emergence(3-4 months)
At this time, bulbs protrude above ground level as foliage turn yellowish...sign for readiness for harvest. Bulbs with mother attached stems are pulled out of ground and tied in bundles of 15-20s and hanged by tying with a rope and suspended on any pole or roofing rafters inside a building for gradual drying.
Never dry it in the direct sunlight as this reduces its weight and natural juice quality.
Note that keep this hanging not more than 3 months as you may lose its weight.
6. Yield Potential and Profitability:- Garlic has yield potential of 1-2/kg/ metre square on the average( can be more with top management), meaning a farmer can harvest an average of 5000kg/ Lima (50m Ă—50m). That's about 100Ă— 50kg bags.
In Zambia, Garlic farm price is about K50( about $2.5) / kg. Meaning, 5000 kgĂ— K50, one gets K250,000 just from 1 Lima. If a farmer does 1 hectare you're a happy farmer with K1,200,000.
This cannot be compared with most crops farmers spend much time, energy, inputs yet with little profit.
So try this out and check the Gold mine in Garlic Production.
Check Garlic prices in supermarkets and you'll understand.

10 SHOCKING MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN ENTERING THE FARMING SPACE.

1. Building a mansion at the farm.
- you do not need a fancy house when starting your farming enterprise unless you intend to set up an unproductive rural home. Let business lead not comfort and pride to show off on Facebook.

2. Starting big without experience.
- only the grave starts on top, every other thing starts small. Starting small is not a weakness but a strategy. There are too many advantages of starting small.

3. Producing without the market.
- it's safer to 'produce for the market, than to market the produce'. That's one of the advantages of starting small. Let the real customer guide you. The market is your greatest teacher.

4. Working on assumptions.
- untested assumptions are very costly. Never put a big budget on assumptions. Thank me later!

5. Hiring unqualified and nearest people.
- only a fool will entrust an $20k investment in the hands of an uneducated relative or some cheap guy or illiterate couple desperately looking for a place to stay. If farming is a business, then get trained people. Never hire anyone you can't fire! Unless it's urgent avoid relatives! Hire the best you can and don't trust them!

6. Setting too short time frames.
- farming is not a get-rich-quick-scheme. This is the reason many backyard broiler farmers never make any money. Although broilers are ready in 6 weeks, your money is usually ready after 2 years of consistency. Get in with a plan to evaluate at least 3 times in 5 years! Anything less will not give you an informed perspective.

7. Investing in infrastructure without production.
- your business is farming not buildings. Invest in stock not structures. If possible have temporary structures for your goats or chickens. Too many people build structures for $10k and buy stock (like chickens) for $200. Very unwise! Start with the cheapest or free structures but with the best breeds/variety of what you want to grow!

8. Working without a plan.
- where do you intend to take the farming business to in 5, 10 or 50 years. I have a 100 year plan that my children know where they come in. They know that the harvest of my efforts might come during their time and we are ok with it. How big do intend to grow? Which markets are you pursuing, when? How will you know when you get there? ETC.

9. Lack of focus.
- copying what everyone is doing. Changing from time to time! Focus on a few, grow and dominate the sector. Competition is not healthy, seek to control a sector. Have laser focus on a few things. If possible specialize! Be a reference point for one particular thing.

10. Remote farming 🧺
- others call it cellphone farming. Once you decide to farm, be willing to divorce city life. Go to town only to buy buildings and to collect rental money! The master's eye fattens the sheep! Don't come to the farm and talk to your workers from a car and go back. Never come drunk! Have a set of gumboots, overalls and get to see things for yourself. Keep a separate set of records handy! Arrive sometimes unannounced! . Control major points like vaccinations etc.

TESTING YOUR SOIL PH WITHOUT A KIT

Testing Your Soil pH Without a Kit
Testing your soil pH is crucial if you want to avoid losses. Your soil pH is the key to understanding if essential nutrients will be available to the roots of your plants. Plants can only access these nutrients if the soil pH is within a certain range. If it isn’t, your crops will never make it no matter how much fertilizer you add. Let’s go back to school for those that don’t know what pH is.

WHAT EXACTLY IS SOIL PH?
pH is short for “potentia hydrogenii” – the power of hydrogen. It is a measure of the number of hydrogen ions present in a substance. For a farmer, pH is a measure of how alkaline (sweet) or acidic (sour) something is. In this case, you should use it to test our soil. However, the pH of the water you use or the pH of rain water can also affect the quality of your soil.

The pH measurement is a logarithmic scale that goes from 1 to 14 with a measurement less than 7 being acidic, 7 neutral, and a measurement higher than 7 alkaline. Because it is a logarithmic scale, each value increases by a factor of 10. For example, 9 is 10 times more alkaline than 8 and 4 is 10 times more acidic than 5. Pure water usually measures a neutral 7 and cow’s milk slightly acidic at 6.5. Both tomatoes and Mosi measure 4.5. Stomach acid is 2.0 and lemons are very acidic at 2.5. Sodium bicarbonate measures 8.4, lime comes in at 12 and ammonia is about 11.1.

As you can see, acidity or alkalinity all depend on what the substance is interacting with. In fact, most plants adapt to any soil pH in the range of 6.0 to 7.5, while some plants prefer distinct soil types.

WEEDS CAN EVEN GIVE YOU A CLUE ABOUT THE PH OF YOUR SOIL
W**d plantain and dandelions increase rapidly in number in acidic soil. Queen Anne’s Lace, Chickweed and chicory prefer alkaline soil. It’s important to first know what you will be growing, before changing the pH of your soil. Here’s a simple test you can do on your own.

DIY SOIL PH TEST
ALKALINITY TEST
1. Take a soil sample from 10 to 15 cm below the surface of your soil. If you have small field, try to mix soil from at least 3 different spots. If your field is large, it’s best to separately test several samples.

2. Remove any sticks, stones, or other foreign items and break up any large clumps of soil.

3. Place 1 cup of soil into a clean, glass container and mix it with water to turn it into mud.

4. Then, add a 1/2 cup of vinegar and slightly stir.

If the soil foams, fizzes or bubbles, then your soil is alkaline. If it doesn’t, test it for acidity.

Acidity Test
1. Take a soil sample from 10 to 15 cm below the surface of your soil. Do not use the same soil you did an alkaline test on.

2. Remove any sticks, stones, or other foreign items and break up any large clumps of soil.

3. Place 1 cup of soil into a clean, glass container and mix it with water to turn it into mud.

4. Add a 1/2 cup of baking soda and stir.

If the soil foams, fizzes or bubbles, then your soil is acidic. If neither of the tests produce much of an effect, your soil is probably has a neutral pH.

These tests can help you determine the pH of your soil. However, for a precise measurement, you will need to either send a soil sample out to a lab for testing or buy a pH soil testing kit. Check with your seed supplier for soil testing kits.

You can make acidic soil neutral by adding lime and you can correct alkaline soil by adding sulfur. The quantity all depends on the actual correction needed, and this is where you need an accurate test.

By Michael Kaumba-

The Tanzanian government says it is ready to import up to one million tonnes of soya beans annually from Zambia.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Zambia HASSAN SIMBA-YAHYA says his country has a huge market for soya beans and is looking to import the produce from Zambia.

Mr SIMBA-YAHYA says Tanzania can easily take up the 100,000 metric tonnes soya bean which has been earmarked for export by the Zambia National Farmers Union and other stakeholders.
