Clan praises (tinanatelo, izithakazelo, direto) usually include patriarchs of the clan, those who had wives and children, who then call themselves after their ancestor.

Nozishada kaMaqhoboza of the Nzuza people is a rare case. He is included in the praises of the Nzuza people. At the time of his death at the battle of Maqongqo in 1840, he was a young man with only one ingoduso promised to him, and no children. But such was his fame that the Nzuza people include him when praising themselves.

He was king Dingane's warrior. He fought all of the battles between the Zulu and the Boers from the killing of Piet Retief right to the battle of Ncome.

His story is part of this book. It was recorded from a child of Matshekana, Mtshekana who was Nozishada's younger brother.

James Stuart was born in Pietermaritzburg in 1868. Growing up in colonial Natal he was a native bilingual speaker of English and isiZulu.

In 1888 he started working as an interpreter, and throughout his life worked for the colonial government.

From the 1890s he began gathering history of the region called KZN today, from the elders. He subsequently published published the following books based on the history he gathered

It has histories from before the formation of the Zulu state, notable events, wars, heroes, etc.

I have merely updated the orthography since the original books were written in the old Zulu orthography.

I have only printed five (5) copies at the moment due to financial constraints.

The price is R270 excluding courier service.

"Imbila yeswela umsila ngekulayetela."

(The dassie lost a tail because of sending others.)

This proverb means that you should rather do things yourself, instead of sending other people. Only you can do it the way you want it done.

It comes from an old folktale about the creation. It is said all animals didn't have tails. The creator then made all sorts of tails and announced a day and a place where the animals would get their tails, each animal would be allowed to choose the tail it liked. The dassie, being lazy, sat on the rocks and basked on the sun, and watched as the animals passed by. It kept on asking them to bring a tail for it too. But none of the animals brought a tail for it and it became the only animal not having a tail till today.

This is the richness of the proverbs of Africa.
