Actor Michael Wright has died at age 70 on August 19, 2026, as announced by his wife Susan, citing heart failure and complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition. He is survived by wife Susan, their five children, and a grandchild.
To film buffs, Wright was a powerhouse talent who made an immediate impact with breakout roles as Clinton, the leader of the Del Bombers in the 1979 coming-of-age drama ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด, and as Carlyle in Robert Altman's 1983 film ๐๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด, a performance so searing it earned him and his co-stars the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.
But to sci-fi fans and readers of this page, Michael Wright will forever be remembered as Elias Taylor in Kenneth Johnsonโs classic NBC miniseries ๐ (1983), ๐: ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก ๐ฝ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ก๐ (1984), and ๐: ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐จ (1984โ1985).
At the time of the Visitor invasion, Elias was a small-time criminal in the process of burglarizing a home as the LA mothership arrived. He initially saw the invasion as a net positive, as it enabled him to move regular household staples on the black market. However, his brother Ben (a doctor and friend of Julie Parrish who had tried to recruit Elias into the Resistance) was killed in a raid to obtain scientific equipment. This tragedy inspired Elias to join the Resistance in Ben's name.
Wright had the privilege of being in the final scene of the original miniseries: at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in New Mexico, Julie and Elias transmit a message into deep space... a longshot plea for help to any alien enemies of the Visitor Leader. In that unforgettable moment, the former street criminal is instilled with a new purpose in life as he meaningfully spray-paints a red "V" on the door to the facility.
Beyond V, Wright continued to deliver iconic performances across decades of film and television: Eddie King Jr. in Robert Townsend's acclaimed 1991 musical drama ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐ท๐ฆ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐ต๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ด, portraying the talented yet troubled lead singer. Raynathan "Ray" Skuggs opposite Wesley Snipes in the 1994 urban drama ๐๐ถ๐จ๐ข๐ณ ๐๐ช๐ญ๐ญ. Omar White in HBO's prison drama ๐๐ป (2001โ2003), bringing raw, mercurial energy to the screen across 22 episodes. Lazarus Prime in the CW's superhero series ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ต๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ (2019).
Wright also made memorable appearances in other fan favorites like ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐ค๐ช๐ฑ๐ข๐ญ (1987), ๐๐ช๐ข๐ฎ๐ช ๐๐ช๐ค๐ฆ, ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐บ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ๐ด (1997), and ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฏ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ (2005).
Michael Wright was an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations. Rest in peace, Elias. The Resistance will never forget you.
