During a recent guiding trip to the Vaal River near Bloemhof, we discovered a spot where the river split to form an island before merging again. The northern side of the split was exceptionally shallow, and we noticed some catfish activity chasing after bait in the shallows. The riverbed was very muddy, and in the deepest places, the water was only about 35-40cm. I had my trace set at 10cm between the adjustable popper and the toffie.

I noticed the movement of a catfish close to the other bank from where I was standing. It was a long throw, and my lure landed about 2 meters from the movement. After three or four pops, I saw a fish kicking mud about a meter behind my popper. I stopped the popping immediately and watched for any further movement around the popper. Luckily, it wasn't too windy, so I could see even the slightest movement in the shallow water. These catfish are experts at finding and grabbing carp and other bait in the shallow water, so I waited patiently for about 40 seconds with no movement. Then, suddenly, the fish grabbed the popper with immense force, causing a spectacular splash in the murky shallow water. The fish put up a decent fight and weighed in at just over 19kg.
It's crucial to remain alert and aware of your surroundings while using a popper, as it could indicate the presence of a fish. In my opinion, we often scare off more fish than we realize by over-popping.
