MS vs PF: what is the difference?

Here we have two South African 2½ Shillings: one graded MS63 and one graded PF64.

MS, or Mint State, means the coin was struck for normal circulation but survived in uncirculated condition.

PF, or Proof, means the coin was specially struck for collectors, usually with sharper detail and a more refined finish.

But here is the key lesson:

Proof does not automatically mean rarer. Mint State does not automatically mean common.

Rarity depends on the coin, the year, the grade, surviving examples, mintage figures, and collector demand.

That is why numismatic value is about far more than silver content.

Want to have your coins professionally graded? Submit them through SANGS.

Want to start or grow your collection? Download the Bassani’s Auction House app and bid on South African numismatic coins from anywhere.

Tonight we come together for something far bigger than the auction itself 🤍

After the Signature Auction, we will be hosting a very special Fundraiser Auction for Juan Turblanche at 8:30pm.

Juan is a well-known and deeply valued pillar of the South African numismatic community. This auction is brought to you by and in collaboration with the South African Coin Collectors Club 🇿🇦.

In true community spirit, every single lot has been generously donated 🤝
and 100% of the proceeds will go directly toward supporting Juan and his family during this time.

This isn’t about the items - it’s about standing together when it matters most. About showing up for one of our own ❤️

Bassani’s Auction House

The Signature Auction by Bassani’s Auction House

01/05/2026

It’s Friday, and we’re on the second-last day of the Bloem Show in Bloemfontein!

Come and meet JWH Coins and Bassani’s Auction House in the Protea Hall.

Whether you want to have a conversation about coins, submit your coins for grading through SANGS, consign your numismatic items for auction through Bassani’s Auction House, or join the South African Coin Collectors Club, we would love to meet you.

We are here to help collectors, investors, and anyone curious about coins understand the market better, safely and transparently.

Come say hello before the show ends.

📍 Bloem Show, Protea Hall
Friday and Saturday remaining

30/04/2026

Cold and wet Thursday here at the Bloem Show, but we are still here and ready to talk coins.

There are only two days left, Friday and Saturday, and hopefully we get clearer skies for the final stretch here in Bloemfontein.

If you have coins, banknotes, proof sets, graded coins, or numismatic items that you would like valued or considered for auction, come visit us at the show. We can assist with valuations and help you consign suitable items to Bassani’s Auction House.

Also, do not miss our Instagram giveaway for the 1952 Five Shilling, a coin that will be pedigreed to the winner. Full details are on the official giveaway post, so please go check it out and make sure your entry is valid.

Hope to see you in the last two days here at the Bloem Show.
