REPOST FROM C-3 COMMUNITY CRIME COOPERATIVE
1 hr ยท
There was not much I could add to the circulating reports and opinions during and after yesterday's action in Westville. Certainly it hits home when you personally know the participants and they are good friends. The reality of one's mortality comes like a cricket bat to a wet carcass. We do appreciate the compliments from the community who, prior to the prevalence of social media, didn't get to see a lot of that happening, unless you were there personally. Both guys are fine. They are well seasoned and spiced veterans of many contacts like that and have the support of us all.
If you have been following the news lately you may be noticing mall armed robberies have occurred almost daily for a week. And now yesterday it happens in a pokey little joint like the Village Mall.
Guys, crooks go where the money is. This gang were VERY well armed and prepared. They knew exactly how they were getting in and out. I fear testing the fates but coming up to Christmas with stacks of money being thrown about, this is going to happen again. Here's how to survive:
1. Get out of the way. I mean this in the most serious tone with out using swear words. Do not DREAM about confronting or hindering a gang like this. They will kill you.
2. Find hard cover and get behind it. A pillar, a shop entrance, anything solid. Get as low as possible. Pull kids in towards you and get them sheltered.
3. Keep your RADAR on extra sharp during this time. Be on the alert for any level of criminal from confidence tricksters to hijackers. Bad guys are shopping too.
4. Do NOT run towards screaming or commotion. This insanity of everyone whipping out cellphones to "record" what's going on is going to make you a bullet magnet. What do you think a bad ass crook is going to do to you if he spots you filming him? Give you an autograph... with a 9mm. See no.1. Get out of the way.
5. Be a good (live) witness. If something happens and you believe you saw something of interest to the police, please cautiously approach an officer AFTER the action and offer your information. Please be prepared to give a written statement. That goes for you too if you are the one with the cell phone camera. If your footage is needed for court, you will be in the box with it. Caveat....you are not compelled to be a Paparazzi. See no.1 Get out of the way.
6. If you are in a store and armed criminals enter... (get out of the way?) Make yourself as small and insignificant as possible. There is no space for heroics. You have a family to go home to. And here's a little tip. SHUT UP. Screaming "Whats going on" or similar is making you noticeable and liable to be picked on because you are drawing extra attention. Also, while you are busy making noise you are not looking and listening. Your voice is drowning out what you could hear as valuable evidence. What the criminals said, if they used a name, what they looked like.
7. Plus 1. Gangs sometimes have spotters already in the area they are targeting. They have guys outside guarding the exit. They have a driver who often stays with the car. Be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour and report it.
8. Malls do not have armed security. (Another discussion altogether). Please understand that the property owners do not want a big gunfight in a crowded gallery. Blood is a terrible thing to clean up. And then there's the families of the dead who complain. Get out of the way. Let them go. If you are going to use your phone, call the Police.
