Canvas is genuinely one of the best tarp materials you can buy — tough, breathable, and it gets better with age. But it does need a bit more care than a poly or PVC tarp, and the mistakes people make are almost always the same ones. 😬
The biggest one? Putting it away before it's completely dry. 💧
Even slightly damp canvas in storage = mildew. And mildew in canvas fibres is difficult to shift and gradually breaks down the fabric over time. The fix is simple — just make sure it's bone dry before it goes away.
Here's a few quick tips for keeping your canvas tarp in great shape:
🧹 Brush off loose debris before you wet it — washing dirt into the weave first just makes the job harder.
🚿 Rinse gently with a garden hose — no high-pressure washers. The concentrated pressure damages the fibre structure over time.
🧽 Clean with a soft brush and mild soap — gentle circular motions, both sides, paying attention to seams and grommet areas.
☁️ Dry completely in a well-ventilated spot — airflow on both sides, out of intense midday sun. Feel the seams and reinforced edges — they hold moisture longest.
📦 Store loosely folded in a cool, dry, ventilated spot — not in a sealed plastic bag. Canvas needs to breathe in storage.
Do these things and a quality canvas tarp will outlast pretty much everything else in your shed. 💪
