Today, September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day was previously commemorated as Orange Shirt Day. 🧡

Orange Shirt Day was created as an opportunity to discuss the effects of residential schools and their legacy. It honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates resilience and affirms a commitment that every child matters.

Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad's heartbreaking story of her first day at a church-run residential school in Williams Lake, BC. That was the day she was stripped of her clothes, never to see her orange shirt again.
Today, orange shirts are worn on September 30th to acknowledge the traumas experienced by First Nations, Metis and Inuit children who attended residential schools in Canada between the late 1800s and 1996.

This Thursday, we encourage you to wear your orange Forget Me Not tees proudly in honour of the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of the residential schools is a vital component to the reconciliation process.
