The tale of two awkward stones.
Sit comfortably, make yourself a cup of tea, and please enjoy this story of two awkward stones 😬
I've had both these stones for many moons; I really don't remember where I got the white (quartz of some kind I'm assuming) one from; and the elongated jellybean-like opal was part payment by a local fossicker for setting another opal of his.
The quartz is of a shape that I don't use a lot in my work, but I really like its colours and inclusions - it's really interesting, so I wanted to do something with it, but what?
The opal - oh it's beautiful deep, deep midnight blue with dark purple flashes is gorgeous, but an unusual shape...what might it become?
A couple of years ago I had an idea and turned the opal into a pendant with a light and dark topaz for company (see last slide). It didn't sell and I wondered out loud to my partner that it was still on the shelf....and then he pointed out that it looked rather like...well, I'll let you decide. So it came down off the shelf and back into my container of unfinished pieces. And there it sat, until recently ,when I was having a play around with all my awkward bits and bobs, and the quartz and opal landed next to each other.
Unfortunately the opal has a tiny, tiny chip now and is priced accordingly, but I really like my new piece - The Awkward Ring 😍
