Remnant Studios Gathering Remnants, Honoring the Past, Transforming for the Next Adventure What is a remnant? A scrap, fragment, feeling. I collect remnants.

Remnant Studios is a book arts studio in the Midwest celebrating the magical power of the book. An unknown tug of something, persistent and hard to ignore — impressions. My creative work is informed by my own personal remnants I have discovered as I explore what it means to be a human on this planet. Scraps from other creators. Old things that still have sparks of life in them, purpose and potent

ial. Books who are calling out, asking to be remade into something new, because they still have words to give; they still have stories to share. I use these remnants respectfully as I uncover and rebind old books into new pieces. My hope is that someone will come along, listen closely, and accept the invitation to experience the next chapter of the story with a reclaimed and rebound book. At Remnant Studios, I take care to recycle as much as I can in the process of creation using scraps in other projects, finding eco-friendly packaging, and finding more efficient techniques to limit waste.

Commission project! She wanted a journal to track her garden layouts, yields, and notes throughout the season. I have a TON of gardening/plant books right now so she picked her cover and we went with dot grid paper for mapping/drawing. She wanted a coil bind so she could write in it easily in the garden. Because the book she picked was fully of drawings of wildflowers, we could not let them go to waste. She picked out her favorites and they made it back into her garden notebook.

How do you think it turned out?

It's been a while hasn't it?

Due to health reasons, I haven't been able to be in my studio, for months. It's been an achingly slow recovery process that is still in progress.

I've been doing my best to be patient and trust that slow is better. Also coming to terms with choosing rest over productivity. A lesson that apparently I need to relearn multiple times 🫣

Today I was finally able to attempt sitting hunched over a project for an hour and I bound a book for the first time since April. Luckily Freckles was patiently waiting in the press all ready to be sewn. Freckles is a lined journal packed with text and illustrations from the original book.

I've got plans for new books, new products, and new styles of bookbinding! Hopefully the rest of the year will be filled with experiments and I'll do my best to document my projects.

You can still find my journals at and I'll hopefully be at a few markets this fall!

Here's to progress!!

So if you have ever talked to me at a market or over coffee, you have heard my short lecture on how I try to reuse as much as possible in my creative process. I reuse covers into new journals, I hide text and illustrations back in the pages, I make bookmarks out of spines, I hand make book charms out of cutoffs, I save illustrations and poems for later. Just a few of the ways I try to recycle.

With all that I do to reuse things, there is still so much paper! For years I saved everything just waiting for the right project or spark of inspiration but I was drowning in paper and it became a creative block.

Earlier this year I found out through a friend that the Kansas Humane Society accepts donations of shredded paper for bedding for their little critters!! This was an absolute game changer.

I found an ancient paper shredder in my parents basement and spent two days getting my paper stash to something more manageable. Now I have a regular step in my process to keep my paper stash under control. I still save my favorite for future projects, but now I can keep the rest moving to a great cause.

Today was my spring shredded paper drop off day!! Five bags of shredded paper for the little critters. So now, every journal purchase goes to supporting little critters sleeping on stories 🖤🖤🖤

I am literally obsessed. I like to sew with a thicker thread and this was perfect. Also I used a waxed thread, but what I have found is sometimes pre-waxed thread can be overly waxed and tacky. And when I try to wax it myself the wax can become dry and flaky. This rainbow thread was perfection.

I seriously hope this comes in every color or else I'm going to be sewing everything with rainbows from here on out 😂

Trying out a new thread and s**t, she's pretty 🤩🩷🩶🩵💙💚💛♥️🖤
