Our organization, York County Volunteer Organization, began in a local school when a couple of teachers noticed a family not coming to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Upon investigating, they discovered the mother was very sick, and the father overwhelmed. They began taking donations to help this young family, and quickly grew into what we now know as 'The Bargain Box'. We were inc
orporated in 1968 as the York County Volunteer Association. Our store has outgrown its location numerous times because of the generosity of our community. Some brief facts about our organization include we began the first "lending library" 5 years before the County built it's first library. We gifted $35,000 for the land purchase of Lackey Free Clinic, $50,000 to help Natasha House, $25,000 to the initial development of the York County Boys and Girls Club, and over $100,000 over the years to install indoor plumbing and running water for families without them. We are the largest monetary contributor to the Food Closet in York County, located at St Lukes Methodist Church. We have and continue to provide diverse grants to our community, such as Meals on Wheels, CASA (Colonial Court Appointed Advocates) who advocate for abused and neglected children, Bright Beginnings, Mikeys Camp KidzNGrief, and many more which are too numerous to mention. We have a Family Assistance team that monitors a help line for individuals who need emergency family assistance. We provide Scholarships for vocational training, and maintain an endowment with Thomas Nelson Community College for workforce programs. All profits from Bargain Box sales are invested back into our community. Unpaid volunteers are the backbone of YCVA. Their tireless dedication and diligence have taken us from a closet in a schoolroom to where we are today. We still need volunteers so please come visit us, we would be happy to talk to you!
