Tonight we took a moment to gather and send off our “young muscle” Michael to college. Michael has been with us the past three years through the daily ups and downs, in scorching sun and falling snow. Usually with a smile on his face even when asked to do the most tedious and back-breaking tasks. I couldn’t do this without him and this whole group of staff, family, and volunteers, including my husband behind the camera!

It’s always fun to see things from the air! My awesome and talented cousin-in-law Cara of Cara Spatz Photography + Design stopped by this week to take some drone shots of the place at peak season. It’s changed quite a bit from photos taken in 2023 by friend and nursery owner Paul Vanevenhoven of Badger Boyz Greenhouses, LLC. and with some of the fun planting plans we have in mind I’m sure it may look quite different in a few years! I have my staff to thank for keeping the place looking as good as it does, it’s a lot of work to both manage a property and keep the retail plants looking good, and they deserve most of the credit!

I was told if I brought some fresh blueberries I could show up late to work today. Enjoyed a few peaceful hours picking at my lifelong friends and neighbors the Traska’s blueberry farm Shades of Blue LLC. Located east of Wausau just north of the intersection of Hwy Q and 52 you’ll find this beautiful spot! They’ll be picking again tonight 5-8 PM, check their website and facebook for future hours. .

It is a sad sight to see the elms on our property almost completely defoliated by the Japanese beetles this time of year. On the upside they make a good trap crop because the beetles do for the most part concentrate themselves on the elms and leave other vulnerable plants alone. We have used the beetle bags here in the past which some people love but others believe attract more beetles than you would otherwise have on your property. We do occasionally spray for them on non-flowering plants to reduce risk to beneficial insects. Picking them off is another simple, but time consuming control option. Many of our customers have had great success with netting their trees and shrubs to provide complete exclusion. Watering our butts off this week but I will take a moment for a timely post. During these hot spells I look for the plants that can take a lickin’ and keep on kicking! Some of my faves of the day: Dwarf bush honeysuckle, yucca filamentosa, sweet fern, rattlesnake master, bur oak, hackberry, Kalm’s St. John’s Wort, and Blackhawks big bluestem!

We’ve had a great week here at Clearview, and are looking forward to a couple days off to rest and reset. We will be closed July 3, 4 and 5th. Back on Monday with a fresh set of metal art, another perennial plug sale and more. Stay tuned! Happy 4th, we are so proud to be serving our great community in this great country! No place we’d rather be.

Leave it to Angie, a hair dresser by training and the only one of us with the required patience and style, to plant up these succulent bird houses! Made by her woodworking aunt, Angie fills them up with drought tolerant succulents and ground covers to create a funky living roof. They take so long to make so we only have one or two ready at a time!
