Hope everyone is safe after yesterday’s storm. We had a massive pine uprooted in our beeyard. There was one very close call, but thankfully, the hive was intact. I usually don’t pack a chainsaw in my honey harvest kit, but this is 2020. So we have to be flexible and adapt!

It’s swarm season! I went out to the yard last night and saw this mass of bees hanging from a branch. This is a swarm which is how honey bees establish new colonies. A queen (generally the old queen, but sometimes a virgin queen) will leave with half the bees and form a clump, usually in a tree branch. Once they’ve congregated, scouts go out to pick a new place to set up their colony. It takes them about a day to pick out a new home, then they’re on their way.
It can be startling, but a swarm of bees is as docile as can be. They have no honeycomb or brood to defend, and their stomachs are so full of honey for the journey that it’s physically difficult for them to sting.
I retrieved this swarm by placing a hive beneath it and cutting the branch.
If you happen across a swarm, feel free to send us a message.
