The APHA Student Assembly is the nation's largest student-led organization dedicated to furthering the development of students, the next generation of professionals in public health and health-related disciplines. The mission of the Podiatric Health Section of APHA is to move the public health agenda forward through advocacy, education and promotion of public health principals in order to establis

h and maintain a healthy society that views health as a personal responsibility and public trust. Further, the Section seeks to promote the essential role the profession of podiatric medicine plays in the public health care system.

🌟 Student Organization Spotlight: Samuel Merritt University College of Podiatric Medicine (SMU-CPM) 🌟

SMU-CPM students have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community health through service, outreach, and clinical education.

Highlights include:
👣 Providing foot and ankle care to underserved populations through the Suitcase Clinic in Berkeley, California
🏮 Participating in the annual Oakland/San Francisco Chinatown Health Fair, offering foot screenings and health education
🩺 Hosting clinical skills workshops to strengthen procedural knowledge and hands-on skills

Through these initiatives, SMU-CPM students are helping improve access to care while promoting foot and ankle health within their communities.

Congratulations to APHA Foot & Ankle Health Section members Dr. Carol Szmuilowicz Kurth (current Secretary) and Dr. Ryan Thomas Crews on their recent publication, “Healthcare Provider Knowledge and Utilization of the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Benefit.”

Throughout the academic year, BUSPM students demonstrated their commitment to public health through educational programming focused on mental health, patient communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement.

Highlights included:

🏅 Special Olympics Lecture: Exploring the importance of caring for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities with Dr. Hill
🧠 APHA × NAMI: Mental Health Awareness & QPR Certification Training
🩹 AAWP × APHA Lunch & Learn: Wound care education with Dr. Spal and the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP)
👧 Podopediatrics Club × APHA: Navigating Difficult Conversations with Pediatric Patients featuring Dr. Charity Ramsey Irizarry

Through these initiatives, BUSPM students expanded their understanding of the many factors that influence health outcomes and strengthened their commitment to serving diverse patient populations.
