Here’s what the beauty industry never explains: “alcohol” isn’t one ingredient. It’s an entire family of molecules. And the only thing they all have in common is a tiny -OH attachment — one oxygen, one hydrogen — called a hydroxyl group. That little tag is what earns any molecule the name “alcohol” in chemistry terms. But beyond that? They can be completely unrecognizable from each other.

The short chain ones — ethanol, isopropyl — are small, volatile, and evaporate fast. That’s what strips and dries.

Fatty alcohols like cetyl are long chain. Waxy, rich, and slow. They don’t evaporate — they coat and condition.

We discontinued our zinc sun balm — and it wasn’t an easy call.

People were buying it. People loved what it stood for. But the truth is, we kept hearing the same things: too thick, white cast that wouldn’t budge, and trying to get product out of a tin with sunscreen hands is basically impossible.
