Dr. George Tiller never planned on becoming an abortion provider. He originally wanted to be a dermatologist, but when his parents died in a plane crash in 1970, he felt obligated to take over his father's abortion clinic. Under Tiller's direction, Women's Health Care Services in Wichita, Kansas, was one of only three clinics in the nation that provided late-term abortions under specific circumstances. Tiller performed third-trimester abortions in cases where the mother didn't find out until late in the pregnancy that her child was suffering from a severe or fatal disability, or in cases where the mother faced "substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function," in accordance with Kansas law.

However, anti-abortion activists tried everything they could to shut Tiller down. From five straight years of daily protests to the firebombing of his clinic to the woman who shot him five times without managing to kill him, Tiller's opponents were relentless — but he refused to bow to the pressure and shutter his practice. Then, in 2009, a man named Scott Roeder took matters into his own hands. He walked into Tiller's church on the morning of Sunday, May 31 and shot him in the head at point-blank range.
