As winter loosens its grip and the ocean begins to wake up, anglers all along the coast know exactly what time it is—bluefin tuna season is almost here. There’s a certain electricity in the air this time of year, a mix of anticipation, preparation, and pure adrenaline for what’s to come.

By early April, boats will start pushing offshore, scanning the horizon and electronics for the first signs of bluefin schools. These early trips are often a blend of patience and persistence—long runs, changing conditions, and that constant hope that the next stop will be the stop. And when it happens, it can set the tone for the entire season.

What’s fueling even more excitement this year are the early reports coming from south of the border. A handful of boats fishing those waters have already encountered promising schools of tuna staging and beginning their migration north. Even better, the size of these fish is no joke. We’re hearing about a wide range—from solid 40-pounders all the way up to true giants pushing past the 200-pound mark.

That kind of grade means one thing: opportunity. Whether you’re a newer angler looking to battle your first bluefin or a seasoned fisherman chasing that trophy-class fish, this season is shaping up to offer something for everyone.

But as any experienced angler knows, a good season doesn’t just happen—you prepare for it.

Now is the time to get your gear dialed in. Check your rods, service your reels, replace worn line, and make sure your tackle box is stocked with the right jigs, hooks, and leaders. Once the bite turns on, it happens fast—and the last place you want to be is standing in a crowded tackle shop hoping they still have what you need.

The early bird doesn’t just get the worm in bluefin fishing—it gets the fish.

There’s also something special about those first trips of the season. The ocean feels wide open, the pressure is lighter, and every stop carries the potential of discovery. It’s the start of a new chapter, one that could be filled with screaming drags, bent rods, and stories you’ll be telling long after the season ends.

So get ready. The boats are lining up, the fish are on the move, and the countdown has begun.

Bluefin season is almost here—and if the early signs are any indication, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

Veneta Fishing Tackle - Tuna Bastard Jigs - Widowmaker series
www.venetafishingtackle.com

The Widow maker was designed for the kind of bluefin that end trips early and empty drag stacks. It is a high-impact reaction jig built to trigger violent strikes from large, aggressive tuna holding deep, moving fast, and feeding with intent.

At its core, the Widow maker features a long, knife-profile body with a high-density alloy core, maximizing sink rate without sacrificing hydrodynamic stability. The elongated silhouette presents a fast-moving, fleeing baitfish profile, a visual trigger that consistently pulls reaction bites from bluefin conditioned to chase and kill fast targets.

Internal mass distribution is tail-forward with a weighted keel, producing a steep, high-speed fall with a tight lateral flash. This fall profile keeps the jig vertical and directly beneath the angler while still producing enough kick to trigger predatory pursuit. Unlike wide flutter jigs that wander out of the zone, the Widow maker stays locked to meter marks and deep schools.

Hydrodynamic shaping reduces turbulence and drag, allowing the jig to cut through heavy current and reach depth efficiently during strong drift conditions. On aggressive lift-and-drop cadences, the Widow maker delivers a sharp, blade-like kick followed by a fast, controlled descent—ideal for triggering reflex strikes from bluefin holding deep or suspended. On a straight free-fall, it tracks true and fast, making it deadly for meter-mark fishing where time in the strike zone matters.

Visually, the Widow maker is designed for maximum predatory stimulation. High-contrast flash finishes and crackle glow patterns provide visibility across depth ranges, while the slender, reflective profile mimics a panicked baitfish flashing as it dives. The finish system is engineered to withstand repeated strikes, deck abuse, and contact with teeth and gill plates without rapid paint failure.

The Widow maker is built for long-range trips, heavy tackle, and big tuna—the jig you tie on when you need speed, depth, and violence in a single piece of iron.

Veneta Fishing Tackle - Tuna Bastard Jigs - Tuna Assassin Series

Balanced Predator Profile — Precision Meets Power

The Tuna Bastard Tuna Assassin features a meticulously engineered balanced predator profile designed to bridge the gap between aggressive reaction jigs and finesse slow-pitch presentations. Its body geometry is purpose-built to imitate the exact hydrodynamic behavior of distressed pelagic baitfish that bluefin target in deep water.

Unlike compact knife jigs or ultra-thin slow-pitch profiles, the Tuna Assassin uses a mid-body, weight-forward balance that delivers a controlled, predictable fall with just enough instability to trigger predatory instinct. This shape allows the jig to track vertically through the water column, minimizing blow-back in current while maintaining a natural side-to-side glide.

On the drop, the Tuna Assassin slides, flutters, and hesitates, mimicking an injured sardine or mackerel peeling away from the school. These micro-pauses and directional changes are exactly what bluefin key on when deciding to commit. The jig’s mass and contour allow it to pe*****te deep marks quickly while still producing enough lift and flash to stay visible and enticing.

On the retrieve, the Tuna Assassin produces a tight, controlled kick with subtle roll, sending reflected flashes in multiple directions without spinning out. This makes it deadly for vertical jigging, yo-yo presentations, and slow-pitch lifts where fish are pressured and conditioned to avoid erratic, unnatural movement.

The result is a jig that stays in the strike zone longer, maintains line control in heavy drift, and triggers both reaction bites and hesitant feeders. It’s a precision weapon with enough backbone to provoke violent strikes from trophy-class bluefin.

Veneta Fishing Tackle - Tuna Bastard Jigs - Skinny Squid series
www.venetafishingtackle.com

The Skinny Squid was designed to mimic one of the most consistent bluefin forage profiles offshore: long, narrow-bodied cephalopods and micro-bait that dominate deep-water food chains. It is a finesse-speed hybrid jig built to trigger bites when bluefin are keyed on slender prey and refuse bulky iron.

At its core, the Skinny Squid features an ultra-slim, elongated body profile with a high-density internal alloy core, maximizing sink rate while maintaining a delicate hydrodynamic footprint. The narrow silhouette presents a low-drag, high-speed target that bluefin recognize as squid, saury, and other needle-shaped prey that dominate offshore diets.

Internal mass distribution is center-balanced with a slight tail bias, producing a fast, vertical fall with subtle lateral shimmer. The Skinny Squid delivers a side t side flutter on the drop, mimicking a squid or thin baitfish gliding and pulsing through the water column. This action keeps the jig in the strike zone while providing just enough movement to trigger opportunistic predators.

Hydrodynamic shaping reduces turbulence and line bow, allowing the Skinny Squid to cut through current efficiently and reach deep marks quickly. On a slow pitch cadence, it produces a tight, compact kick followed by a controlled glide, simulating a squid pulsing its mantle and then stalling. On a straight free-fall, it tracks true and narrow, making it ideal for meter-mark fishing when precision and speed matter.

Visually, the Skinny Squid is designed for subtle realism rather than brute flash. High-polish reflective finishes and selective glow stripe accents create a soft, natural flash that imitates squid mantle translucence. Glow patterns are concentrated along the mid-body and edges to suggest bioluminescence without overwhelming the silhouette, making it effective in both daylight and low-light conditions.

The Skinny Squid is engineered for finicky fish, pressured conditions, and forage-matching scenarios—the jig you reach for when bluefin refuse aggressive profiles and demand something thin, fast, and natural.
