I carry Power and Light Press letterpress cards in my shop—because they make me chuckle, they are made in New Mexico and I feel deeply what owner said about “moving through life to the beat of a lovable but slightly fu**ed up drummer” ….then one day Kyle the owner and operator of Power and Light Press walked into my shop w . After a quick visit—I knew I wanted to do more w these creative and kind souls.

I often used “we” when it was just “me”….well now we are officially a “we” and I couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to our first Desert Spoon team member! Please welcome Laura to the shop—if you stop in on a Tuesday or Thursday she will likely be here. I am grateful for her partnership…and the gift of time off 🤎

Laura Hicks is an artist, maker, and steward of public lands, living and working between the desert landscapes of Far West Texas and southern New Mexico. With over a decade of experience leading trail crews for the National Park Service in the backcountry of Big Bend National Park, she developed a deep connection to the rugged landscapes that now inspire her creative work.

Laura founded a jewelry brand inspired by ancient metalsmithing and natural landscapes. With a degree in retail and fashion merchandising from Ohio University, she is drawn to thoughtful design, vintage treasures, and the stories objects carry. Laura lives in Alamogordo, New Mexico and maintains a presence near Big Bend while homesteading off-grid in Terlingua, TX; enjoying the outdoors with her husband, son and two sighthound desert dogs.

She is excited to deepen her connection with the community through her work with Desert Spoon, sharing spaces, stories, and a love for gathering.
