Q: What are the most important first steps to ensure I get the most out of my machine?

A: WATER!! Water is by far the single most important aspect of your espresso machine. Use soft water and you will most likely have years of trouble free service and amazing espressos. Use hard water and you will a large bill of thousands of dollars to fix. Hard water will VOID your warranty.
