🎃👻 LET’S DESIGN A HALLOWEEN BANDANA! 👻🎃

Halloween is coming, and I’m getting ready to design this year’s Halloween bandana!

☀️🐾 SENIOR DOG SUMMER: ACTIVITY #3 🐾☀️

Make a Frozen Treat! 🍦

It's hot out, your dog is bored, and nobody wants to be outside in the middle of the afternoon. Sounds like the perfect time for a frozen treat!

One of my favorite easy enrichment activities is making little frozen treats. They can be as simple as something you already have in your kitchen, and you can make them in little silicone molds, freeze them on a lick mat, or add them to a food toy for a longer lasting activity.

A few combinations to try:
🫐 Goat milk + blueberries
🎃 Pumpkin + plain yogurt
🍌 Banana + peanut butter
🍉 Watermelon + water
🥣 Low sodium broth + a few of their favorite treats

Just be sure to use ingredients that are appropriate for your individual dog and their dietary needs. And don't forget to adjust their regular meals if needed so they're not getting too many extra calories from treats.

And this is especially nice for senior dogs who may not be able to go on long walks or adventures in the summer heat. Mental enrichment can be just as important as physical activity, and sometimes a little frozen treat is all it takes to turn an ordinary afternoon into something special. 💜

One little reminder about enrichment: it's not meant to be a babysitter for your dog.

The goal isn't simply to give them something that keeps them busy while you walk away. Good enrichment gives them an opportunity to use their natural instincts, engage their senses, problem solve, and actually enjoy the experience.

And honestly, it's even better when you participate with them. Sit beside them while they work on their frozen treat, encourage them, talk to them, or make it something you do together. For our dogs, enrichment can be just as much about the connection with us as it is about the activity itself.

Jack Update 🐩

Good news from the Jack department! 🥹 He is feeling SO much better.

The IVDD isn’t something completely new for Jack, the vet says he’s probably had it for a long time. Looking back, I realize he was actually having a flare up when I first got him, it just wasn’t nearly as bad as this one. And now that I know what to look for, I’m recognizing some of the same things he was doing back then.

He’s still not 100%, and he’s supposed to take it easy for the next few weeks, but he is doing SO much better and, more importantly, he’s feeling so much happier. I’m finally seeing my sweet little Jack starting to come back.

And he started STRETCHING again! 🤣 I never thought I’d be this excited to see a dog stretch, but here we are. 😂

We’re continuing with his weekly “Jackupuncture” (aka acupuncture, but obviously I had to give it a Jack name 😂) and taking things slow while he continues to heal.

Thank you SO much to everyone who has sent prayers, good thoughts, well wishes, love, and anything else good his way. 💜 I truly believe all of that goodness is helping him.

🐾 SENIOR DOG SUMMER ACTIVITY #2: GO ON A SNIFFARI!

Forget how far you walked. Forget how fast you went. For a Sniffari, the nose is in charge! 😂

Let your pup take the lead and sniff, explore, investigate and stop at every interesting smell along the way.

For senior dogs, a Sniffari is a great way to get some gentle mental stimulation without turning your walk into a big workout. But really, dogs of any age can enjoy a good Sniffari!

And if Jack were writing this post, he would probably say:
STOP. SMELL EVERYTHING. REPEAT. 😂🐶

So grab the leash, slow things down and let your dog choose the adventure. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that happen at a very slow pace.
