It’s a Friday evening in December 1988.

The minute you walk into Kmart, you can tell Christmas is getting close. The store is packed with families pushing overflowing carts while Christmas music plays somewhere above the noise.

You head straight for the toy department.

Every aisle seems better than the last—remote-control cars, action figures, stuffed animals and toys you’ve been circling in the Christmas catalogs for weeks.

Mom keeps reminding you, **“Don’t wander too far.”**

But then you spot something you put on your Christmas list.

You stop and stare at the box while Mom catches up behind you.

“Maybe Santa already knows,” she says with a smile.

You reluctantly put it back and continue through the crowded store.

You don’t know it yet, but years from now you won’t remember what was in that box.

You’ll remember **this**—the bright Kmart lights, the crowded toy aisles, Christmas music playing overhead and that incredible feeling that Christmas was almost here.

**December 1988. When waiting for Christmas was half the magic. 🎄**
