I love a good collaboration. In October of 1999 the Black Crowes and Jimmy Page played a series of shows together that are now (in some circles) legendary. Black Crowes tunes, Led Zeppelin tunes; just fantastic shows all around. The live album of the LA shows was released in 2000, and a reissue box set recently came out. So fun to crank this one up. Saw some pics this week of friends seeing Joe Jackson in concert. I always miss when he’s in town. I decided to pull out his 1979 debut Look Sharp and give it a spin. Those that know me know that Mudhoney is one of my all time favorite bands. I have probably seen them live more than any of the other bands I dig. While Superfuzz Bigmuff, Mudhoney, and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge are seminal albums my Favorite Mudhoney album is 1998’s Tomorrow Hit Today. The song writing, and the production, to my ears this is Mudhoney at its very best. Don’t get me wrong, all their albums are killer in my book, but Tomorrow Hit Today is tops for me. I was introduced to punk rock in my late elementary school years. By junior high while punk was still ever present I started listening to new wave and college rock radio bands. Those bands I gravitated to a bit more because with all of the amplified feelings a young teen has, those bands seemed know exactly how I felt and helped me make sense of the things I was feeling.

One such band is The Cure. The musical melodies, the lyrics, the atmosphere those songs created. They are all very cinematic and emotional. The Cure was one of the first bands I recall listening to where there could be no words and the music alone would make me feel something. That’s not easy to do.

37 years ago the Cure released Disintegration. One of the singles off that album is an all time favorite of mine, Pictures of You. The line, “If only I thought of the right words, I could’ve held on to your heart” has always made me feel some kind of way. Maybe I’m reminiscing too much here…

Beautiful day today. Windows open, gentle breeze running through the house and some tunes echoing upstairs. I pulled out this blast from the past as it was released on this day in 1989. One of my favorite albums in high school and is still a great listen today. This weeks Tony’s Weekend Wax selection is the Screaming Trees - Buzz Factory.

31 years ago today Hum released You’d Prefer an Astronaut. I had never heard of them until I heard Stars on the radio. I’m a sucker for big guitars and Hum delivers. This album is still one of my favs and while Stars remains the “hit” off the album I prefer I’d Like Your Hair Long. So to celebrate its 31st birthday it’s this weeks Tony’s Weekend Wax selection.

Up late this morning, ears still ringing from last night, coffee in my cup, and scrolling through social media. Last night was The Fu***ng Eagles record release party for their Covid era double album Beak & Destroy. The album has been paired down to fit on a single 12” record and has been released on the legendary local Leopard Gecko records. This is Leopard Gecko’s first 12” release and first release since 1990. Additionally even though the Fu***ng Eagles have been around for decades this is their very first vinyl release. So for all those reasons it’s my Tony’s Weekend Wax selection for this week.

Suns out, windows cracked open, a fresh breeze moving through the house. It all makes me smile and in the mood for something upbeat. One of the best pop records to come out of the 90’s in my opinion was recorded by a band who should have been much bigger than they were (or are). But if you ask me this album from June of 1992 is a perfect pop album. No skips. Pop perfection. This week’s Tony’s Weekend Wax selection is The Lemonheads ~ It’s A Shame About Ray.
