π€ A 1st barrel pocket exercise I came up with a year or 2 ago that helped me out. Maybe you're a beginner or your new horse is 2-3 levels/Ds up from what you're used to. It's the concept of if you can do it faster than the actual experience, the actual will seem slower/easier. I speeded things up without compromising my horse, by training my vision.
Telephone pole exercise: Also helpful for running out of a blind alleyway. If you're a passenger going down the highway, 55-65 mph & there are telephone poles, at every pole, visually lock in on where your pocket is if that pole was first barrel. (If need be, start with every other pole.) From the photo you get an idea of how fast you will be finding your pocket compared to your actual run.
If you need to call a friend up & ask if they can drive you up & down the highway so you can practice barrels, post in the comments what their reaction is! π
