An era has ended. When we went to the bank this week we were told that we couldn’t get any more pennies. While we support the deprecation of America’s lowest-denomination coin (it’s literally the only action by the current federal administration we agree with) we can’t help but be a little sad.

Once these little guys in our cash drawer are gone, we’ll be rounding off all cash purchases made in the store. We’ll miss you, Abe in profile. The Copper Age is over.

Join us on Tuesday, May 12 to celebrate the publication of On and On by Eric Von Schrader, a mystical morality tale for our time, set in a hilariously dysfunctional, amoral corporation, where one brave soul is trying to survive while holding on to her convictions.

You can reserve an autographed copy online through our event page (link in bio), but walk-ins are also welcome!

Author .fehrman stopped by today to sign copies of This Vast Enterprise, his new book about the Lewis and Clark expedition, which happens to be one of our favorite reads of 2026. When we recommended it in our newsletter, we said this about it:

“The American Odyssey of Lewis and Clark has been sorely overdue for reappraisal, and there’s no one better than Craig Fehrman to give us that fresh, full, much-needed take. At last this story is being told from all sides, not as a one-directional journey into terra incognita, but as an ongoing encounter of cultures equally deserving of attention and respect. Rotating through the perspectives of all parties concerned, from the leaders of the expedition to those they recruited, traded with, fought with, and even enslaved, the book is equally full of fact and feeling. The palpable sense of what it was like to be engaged in this vast enterprise has never been better expressed than it is here.”

Pick one up for Mother’s Day! Another for Father’s Day! And get one for yourself while you’re at it!

These carts hint at how much restocking we had to do after Independent Bookstore Day. Seemed like a great time was had by all, and since we shared a bit of everyone’s joy, we had the most fun by far! Hope to see more of you through the summer as you travel the state collecting stickers for you passport…

• Exclusive books and merch available only at participating stores.
• All customers will receive a custom-made crossword puzzle; complete and return it the following week and earn a discount coupon.
• Every customer wearing a Leviathan Bookstore shirt will receive 10% off their purchases.
• Spend at least $50 and get a free pick from our Blind Date with a Book Box.

One of the reasons we chose the Leviathan as our mascot is that, like a bookstore, it can be anything you imagine it to be. Usually it takes on a pachydermal aspect, as in our logo, but we also often picture it as a whale. So you can see why we were so delighted with this gift from a customer and friend. Come see it swim in person!

One of the most famous poems in the (Middle) English language bygynneth like so: “Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote, / The droghte of March hath perced to the roote.” I don’t know how sweet the showers of the past couple days were, but they definitely brought the drought of March to an end. Is Chaucer the reason that April was named National Poetry Month? No clue, but we’re pretty excited about it.

So excited, in fact, that we’re sponsoring an entire month of poetry in April. A Poem a Day is a program on .3 that’s already started bringing readings of historic and contemporary verse to local airwaves, courtesy of us. Tune in daily to listen. You might even hear a familiar voice.
