To most people, a garden is a peaceful escape. To me, it’s a reminder of why I fell in love with chemistry. 🌿🧪

My obsession with plant compounds isn't new. Back in 2022, I got to present my undergraduate research at the American Chemical Society conference in San Diego. My project focused on developing a more eco-friendly way to extract peppermint essential oil, using menthol recovery to measure the extraction “completeness.”

Now, with just two (and a half) semesters left of my Master's in Cosmetic Science, I’m starting my graduate capstone project and taking that passion in a new direction!

My project is based on terpenes, the natural organic compounds that give plants their distinct scents (think of the crisp smell of pine, the brightness of citrus, or the cooling kick of menthol!).

My current research is looking into something pretty exciting: I’m figuring out if specific terpenes can act as a selective solution for acne. Oftentimes, traditional antibiotics and harsh treatments tend to wipe out all microbes on your skin, killing the good ones alongside the bad ones. I'm looking at how we can target the specific microorganisms that trigger breakouts while leaving the rest of your skin microbiome thriving.

📢PSA: there are lots of great products you can formulate yourself, but sunscreen is not one of them.

Tallow is not sunscreen. Neither is a DIY recipe from TikTok or Pinterest. And please… stop purchasing “sun protectant” products from handcrafted sources.

Without professional, high-shear dispersion equipment, mineral filters like zinc oxide clump together on a microscopic level. Mixing oils or fats with zinc, even “non-nano grade,” leaves you with invisible gaps, patchy coverage, and a high risk of sunburn.

In the US, sunscreens are regulated over-the-counter drugs. They have to adhere to a strict FDA monograph. That means rigorous lab processing and clinical SPF testing just to guarantee they actually protect you.

As a graduate student finishing my master’s in cosmetic science, I am begging you to ignore the myths: SUNSCREEN PREVENTS SKIN CANCER. It does not cause it. Skin cancer is still the most common cancer in the US, especially in the 20-35 age group.

Getting everything perfect for the new Salty Soul Collection launch! 🫧 Here’s a sneak peek and my ratings for each of the soap cuts:

🍋‍🟩Frozen Margarita: 7/10
The smell is AMAZING and I love the top, but my lightest green & yellow look almost the same color. (Lime margarita & coconut scent)

🏝️ Endless Summer: 8/10
This turned out ALMOST exactly how I envisioned, but the three reddish ombré layers look slightly too similar. (Peach mango scent)

🦀 Coastal Scrub: 10/10
Love the contrast between the bright green bar and red little crab! (Lemongrass & lemon scent)

🐢 Turtle Splash: 9/10
Almost design perfect, I just wish there would’ve been more white to break up the greens & blues. (Very “ocean” clean scent)
