I just finished the most beautiful book I have read all year. Itโs one of those books where you take a deep sigh at the end, recognizing its beauty. I cannot say enough good things about Fishbone Cinderella by Elizabeth Lim
This book follows the maternal side of a family in China, beginning with the Japanese invasion in the 1940โs. We follow the daughter to Hong Kong to live with her father and his second wife, around the 50โs or so, and finally we continue with the granddaughter in San Francisco in the 80โs.
First of all, I recently read that the author spent years writing down her grandmothers history, and based this book off of her. Her grandmother hid in a cupboard to hide from the Japanese, she ate insects and what they could find to survive, and this is included in the book. It is a part of history that I donโt know a lot about, so it was fascinating, though heartbreaking, to read.
If you are a fan of historical fiction, and a spice of folklore, you will love this book. It is captivating, interesting and endearing.
There is one intimate scene, but not very graphic. There is one F word and a few swearwords throughout, but definitely a book I will let my teen girls read ๐ค๐ป
